What does (taco) mean? I've seen it several times on here and can't figure it out for the life of me.

usually caused by not matching wing to tank size appropriately.

also known as "there is no perfect wing that works well for doubles and singles"

also known as "there are different wing sizes that are appropriate for different doubles"

taco'ing is a PITA from a gas trapping standpoint. not that it isn't dive-able, just not as smoooooth as the correctly sized wing :)

I saw a PADI recreational instructor out on his first dive with his 90# wing, wrapped around his single Al80 tank, taking an AOW student out for a dive one time. That was the taco of hell. Two balloons of gas floating about a foot above his tank. That can't have been easy to dive, although he came out of the water gushing about how great it was -- I assume that wing wound up with bungees on it sometime soon afterwards...

The more typical taco is formed by just having a slightly-too-large wing on a set of doubles so that the wing becomes "pinched" by the tank making it so that the gas will not migrate very easily. That kind of a taco doesn't look that bad on pics, and you can certainly dive it, but you'll need to break trim significantly more to migrate gas around, and it has a tendency to trap gas on one side, so you can wind up off-balance. A properly mated set of tanks and wing shouldn't get that diving-on-my-side feeling. Some divers like being able to trap gas, but I can only think of one time I wanted that, and I had a set of 4 empty Al80s on one side and had put a 5# weight clipped off in my pocket and a 5# weight on my waist on the other side which just added to the overall torque -- not one of my best ideas about weighting...

In a (too) lively thread, when associated with beer, taco is an attempt to move a conversation to more neutral territory.

Apparently there was a group that decided to make a standardized way of setting up gear and techniques in order to make cave diving a safer sport, and they chose the name "Do It Right". Which rubbed a lot of people the wrong way since it implies if you weren't diving that way you were doing it wrong. Which led to flame wars, arguments, hostility, tensions, etc. The usual Internet stuff, plus some. So there are still people around who bristle up at the term DIR. And hence things like 'taco' or 'puppies and ice cream' (the term I asked about which got me the story just repeated...) around here, in an attempt to keep things peaceful and friendly.

Or so I've heard, anyway.

Tacos are best using shredded prime rib! There was a place in Steamboat, Colorado that made them that way. Could fit only two on a dinner plate, and they were only $0.75/each ($0.25 homemade guacamole). So awesome!! BbbleMkr's mother, also, makes some of the best tacos too! I love Mexican food!!
