Tide and Current Prediction app review (Android)

Post by airsix »

Years ago I used Palm-OS devices and a wonderful tide and current app called Tide Tool for Palm. For the past 3 years I've used Android phones and I've really missed that app. There are many tide apps for Android and I don't really like any of them. Every quarter or so I go looking to see if there are any new contenders and a few days ago I found a good one. Tides & Currents by FlyToMap is new and worth looking at. The charts are interactive and easy to read.

Things I like:
Reporting stations are categorized either tide or current, not jumbled together in one list.
Ability read height/velocity at specific times as you scroll across the interactive chart.
Ability to save a favorites list of stations. Icons identify whether tidal or current reporting.
Pick a date and then scroll through up to 7 days in one continuous scrolling chart.
Easy to read

Don't like:
Graphics are a bit cartoonish
It's free (I'd gladly pay a buck or 2 for this)

Find it here.

+1 I also search for tide/current apps about once a month. I used to use Tidecast but this one craps on that one, points at it, laughs, and walks away.

This app is :metal:

I haven't tried that one, but recently installed Tide Prediction on my android. It works like the old tide tool did in that it lives on your device, you do not need a wireless connection to use it. It is better than the old tide tool in that you can scroll through the days quickly one at a time without limit, or input the date. I like it.

I have been looking for a good replacement for tide cast since it took a dump three or four months ago. Thanks for the review! :taco:

Gdog,
Write to FlyToMap. The app is supposed to be compatible with Android 1.6 and newer. Your Sensation is a recent phone (2.3 or better) and it should work. I'm sure they would appreciate the feedback and try to work a fix into the next release.
