Glass repair?

Post by John Rawlings »

Nothing to do with diving....

One of my dogs just put his ass end through the front of my antique book shelf. The dog's fine, but the glass windows of two of the bookshelf doors are toast!

By any chance, do any of you know a glass business that would do a good job of repair?

Most any glass shop could cut you the glass but if you feel it's valuable as an antique I would call a couple of antique shops and ask who they would recommend. Working with antiques is as much art as it is physical. Sounder has done some real awesome restoration on old homes. Maybe he can help.

Any glass shop will probably do a decent job. If you can remove the door and take it to the shop, so much the better. I'm currently using skyline windows on 99 and 175th, but there's probably a fine option more convenient to your house.

Any number of local glass shops can cut something to fit your cabinet. Without seeing some photos I can't tell you if it will take an experienced craftsman with furniture restoration skills or just an competent woodworker to remove and replace the glass. New glass might look too good as it will be more perfect than antique glass, you might give some thought to replacing adjoining glass that wasn't broken if appearances matter to you.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I dropped the doors off at Sunset Glass yesterday (looked like a really nice shop!) and they should be done within a couple of days. I'm looking forward to having my shelves back in use again and I appreciate everyone's suggestions.

John,

Let me know how they turn out. I used Sunset Glass for all my cabinetry door inserts, when I had my cabinetry business. But that was a long time ago :-) They were always top-notch. BTW - Glad the dog is okay.

They did a fine job. My books are once again safely behind glass doors....at least until the NEXT dog ass crashes through! HA!
