Weight System for BP/W

Post by Scubie Doo »

I have been looking at weight harnesses and come up with the:

DUI Weight and Trim
Oxycheq Renegade
Seasoft Seawolf

I have borrowed my friends Seasoft Seawolf and it is decent. However, I am wondering if anyone has used the DUI or Oxycheq system and what are your thoughts? Plus any suggestions on where to buy the recommended harness?

Any other weighting options/ideas are welcome. But I have a really jacked up back, so no go on a simple weight belt. Thanks for your help.

DUI Classic Weight and Trim. Comfortable and very adjustable. Worth every cent.

That's a good question. L? Maybe their site has sizing.

And I recommend the Classic over the W&T II.

Why the "weight system" vs a few lbs (or none) on the cam bands and the rest in a weightbelt?

My back is toast, a weight belt tends to make my back really sore.

How much lead do you need?
I have had spine surgery twice. With a single hp100 I wear about 22 on the belt plus 10 on the lower cam band. (the weezle extreme+ is lofty!) The lead on the cam bands, off the waist, and slightly higher is key for me.
Having all you lead in the DUI harness may or may not help much. You can wear it "lower" past your hips, but it may not stay there when you're in trim. And if you can get it to stay lower so it doesn't hyper extend your back it may make you feet heavy.

I put 14-18 on my waist depending on my undergarment and 8 on my upper cam bands. I have dove a weight belt and a weight harness and the harness helps my back. I have not had surgery but I know what makes my back hurt and what doesn't.

Another vote for the DUI system. I like to be able to get my weight OFF the BP/W (even though I use Tobin's weight plates) so that it is easier to manuever. I can't wear, and really dislike, wt belts -- thus, the DUI harness is the answer.

YMMV

For those of us with careful backs, the W&T takes the weight off of the lower back, and spreads it across the entire spine.

Luv mine.

Weighted STA's are frowned upon by some, because the weight is slightly farther away from the body.

The closer you can keep the weight to your body, the better it is.

I have dove with someone using the Beaver Technical Weight Belt Harness made and sold in England. It is really worth a look. particularly for those diving out of small boats were they need to dawn and remove their gear in the water. The Beaver is a weight harness with integrated weight system type pockets to make the weights easier to add or remove.

Are they frowned upon by a thread starter ? I used to dive weighted STA rig without any problems.

Who frowns upon weighted STA's?

While I generally agree closer to the body helps contribute to a more balanced rig, I'd be more concerned with closer to the CoG. Tank valves, manifolds and 1st stages are close the body (shoulders), and that doesn't necessarily mean "better", considering they often need to be counterbalanced with v-weight, tail weight, etc.

Well for the lead in them, they do always seem to be rediculously overpriced...

I have over a thousand dives on my DUI classic and if it wears out before I do I will buy another. I too have the bad back thing not to mention having no waist to support a weight belt! :rawlings: :rawlings:

I dunno, random posts here and there across numerous boards. I have no experience with an STA, although I did pick my rig specifically so I didnt need an STA.

Now there is one downside to the W&T.

If you are boating, and you need to doff your gear before climbing onboard, you have to inflate your suit, and have two ropes, one clipped to your BP/W rig, one to the W&T.

Its not a big deal, but you have to be aware and prepare for it.

Darn phone... When you are properly weighted, if you take your BP/W off you should be more than positive, even with a W&T system on. If you are trying to climb into an inflatable, you would need that extra line anyhow for a weight belt.

Scubie Doo, at your height I would definitely try any harness system before buying it. I found that the weight and trim (2 or classic) took up too much vertical real estate on my 5'8" / 32" waist frame - it either hung too low below my backplate waist belt which made me butt-heavy and interfered with hips/upper thigh when frog kicking, or was too high above my waist belt, constricting my ribs. I also tried it directly under the waist belt, but then had to readjust harness for size and it would never stay put during the dive, slipping out thereby causing the waistbelt to be too big and my backplate to be unstable. For single tank diving I have since gone back to an XS scuba 6 pocket weight belt with 13-15# in it and 4# on the top cam band. Although I am young, my back is not what it once was due to 13 years of martial arts and I never found the weight belt to be bothersome if I secured it quite snugly directly in the small of my back and then down along my iliac crest.
