New Book on the Lake Crescent Warren Case

Post by John Rawlings »

Northwest divers have talked for years about the "Warren case" in Lake Crescent and the long search for the missing couple. In the years since the discovery of the Warren car, many of the tech divers here on NWDC have actually dived on the wreckage of the car in the lake, and I'm sure that everyone that has done so has found it to be a powerful experience impacted by what you knew about the mysterious disappearance of the couple back in 1929 - it's literally like diving a gravesite.

Well, after years of research former NPS Ranger Dan Pontbriand, my friend and our dive team leader in the search, has finally completed his book on the Warren mystery and how it was solved, covering the story from their disappearance in 1929, through the various searches over several decades, and the final success of our team. It is both a dive story and a law enforcement story, and I found his wrap up of the case fascinating.

The book is now available through Dan's website: http://www.themissingones.com/

It's available through Amazon.com as well.

Disclaimer: I was an active member of the "modern" search team, and Dan is most certainly a good friend of mine, but I am not financially affiliated with this book project in any way (although I did write the brief Forward to the book) other than supporting him and announcing this release as a friend.

This book is now On Sale at Amazon for only $3.99 on the Kindle!

Really hope the author at least gets something at these prices!

Thanks for posting the Amazon link!

I just received my hard cover copy from Dan. It's exciting to see the story in print - he did a really fine job in explaining it all.

Just bought my kindle copy. Looking forward to it. I met Mr. Pontbriand at Lake Crescent 4 or 5 years ago. He's quite a guy.

Just finished it on my kindle. I think I will order a hard copy to add to my wee diving library as well. What a fun read. So cool to see so many of my friend's names in there!

The book has a side benefit for me. After Dan mailed me my copy I was looking through it with my 7 year old granddaughter in my lap and telling her a "child's version" of the story. She suddenly froze and grabbed a page, pointing to a photo of me standing with my dive buddy, Jerome Ryan, and said, "Papa, is that you????" For the next couple of days she proudly showed that page to her friends....then her 7 year old attention span diverted her to other things.

Still, it was fun while it lasted! HA!

Thats great news. Do you know if Dan does better if I buy the hard copy or the electronic copy?
He put so much into it that I'd like to purchase where he gets the most our of it.
I'm really looking foward to reading that story.

I believe that he benefits most when someone orders a physical book through his own website.

Thank you John... I'm headed there now!
I don't know if you recall but shortly after you all found it I emailed you about the location as we were ALL OVER THE MAP and not even close... I think you chuckled a bit when we spoke on the phone a few days later... Dan was so helpful he had me call him when we were at the lake and he gave me great directions... we hopped in the water and 15 min's later we were on the wreck... I owe Dan (as well as you) a BIG favor and perhaps this is a way to start payin it back!...

I'm really excited about the book, I'm anticipating a great read and I'll be pointing you out to the grandkids my friend! :)

With the publishing of this book I suspect that there will once again be a great deal of interest in diving the "Warren Car" by a new generation of divers.

Three things:

1) It is not, repeat NOT, at recreational depths. This is a dive for trained Tech divers using appropriate gasses and equipment only. If you think that it would be a "hoot" to try to bounce down to the car with an AL 80, you're an idiot and should think again. Don't do this dive without the appropriate training and equipment, period.

2) Diving at the site of the Warren car requires a permit from Olympic National Park that can be obtained from Park Headquarters. The Rangers drive by the location multiple times per day and will always stop to check that anyone diving there has the proper permit.

3) The site is within a National Park and has been designated as a grave site. It is a crime to remove anything from the car or its immediate environment. Since its discovery a few foul, sorry-excuses-for individuals have decided to remove pieces of the car and artifacts, and in doing so they have disgraced themselves specifically and the diving community in general. If you are privileged enough to dive this site look but don't touch and never take anything from it.

Thanks for posting this. I have purchased the e-book and downloaded it to my iPhone.

I have been curious about this ever since I first heard of it years ago. It must have been about the time you guys found the wreck. I remember reading in the news that a car had been found but that it was still unknown if it was the Warren's car. I've looked for more info a few times since then and found that it had been positively identified as the Warren's car but little else. I look forward to reading the whole story.

I just finished the book on flight home. I really enjoyed it. I hope people on NWDC buy this book. It is a great dive story right in our backyard!

I won't give away any spoilers, but way to go all that were involved!
