weight loss and weighting

Post by Jeff Pack »

I've been on a pretty strict weight loss program, and am now down to a weight I havent seen since my 20's.

Without doing the 500 psi weight check, I'm trying to get some idea on the change of lead I need to carry.

Now granted I changed from a Zeagle BP and ranger wing, to a Halcyon BP and DIve Rite EP wing, my last dive was more work to get down than before the change. Yes, I know each is different, but I would have thought they'd be pretty similar. Trim was off, now I'm foot heavy again so going to add 2 pounds up top to see if that will trimout, but I'm curious overall with about 12pds of weight loss, I would have thought I'd descend easier, not harder.

Any experience or insight appreciated.

I know that you just switched to a different BP (and harness too I assume) but one thing to keep in mind is that as your girth changes your harness fit is affected. It may move the position of the tank on your body and affect your trim in ways that you didn't anticipate.

the trim change was separated by only 2 weeks and the new BP/W. I was spot dialed in with the Zeagle, so I guess for starters to add some trim weight up high (+2) and see how that helps my trim again. Maybe shift the tank abit higher later.

I lost 35-40# and didn't notice a huge weighting difference, haven't noticed a huge difference in the pool either. I know it has some effect on paper, but unless you're dropping 100's of lbs the effect will be washed out by more important differences (different BCD/wing, different drysuit, different undergarments, more comfort, more skill dumping gas, etc).

Thats because with the size of your melon it didn't change your displacement much at all ;) :smt064

In all seriousness Jeff, it sounds like you are trapping some gas in that wing.

With my GEM, I gave up OC and am switching to SCR and CCR.

Sounds so, I was thinking about switching out the Rec EXP, to a Voyager, I'm just concerned over whether the Voyager will have enough lift. I'm packing the Gem, Steel 95, SS BP, and 30pds of lead.

Any thoughts?

I have lost 70 lbs and dropped 4-6 pounds from my kit depending on my undergarment.

I have no idea re: that configuration, to me it sounds kind of worst of both worlds. A big steel tank with a bunch of swing weight + a canister that if it floods will be heavy.

Is any of your lead ditch-able? I assume you are talking about using this locally so have a drysuit?

SCR and CCR is much more weight sensitive than OC. So if you loose or gain weight things are going to change. remember you have a sweet spot in loop volume that you want to try to stay in for the best WOB. Everyone is going to be different unless you are tank dipping your body fat on a regular basis to do calculations off of.

Correct, drysuit. I think the voyager is borderline. 20 pounds of my weight is ditchable.

I think Underwater during failure I have enough options (drysuit and/or ditching).

I was just thinking, by the time I add my bailout bottle, deco bottle, the +4-6 pounds(total) for empty weight of these, arent I overloading the Voyager at that point? At least at the beginning of the dive if I have a surface emergency?
(although I can compensate with drysuit).

Thoughts? That was why I went with next larger wing, figuring I'd use the voyager for warmer waters.

Question: I notice now that adding my BO bottle (al40 luxfer), my trim is now perfect. Is that perhaps due to the addl. weight up top, or the floaty'ness of the rear of the tank lifting my feet abit?

Without the BO bottle, I'm alittle foot heavy still, but with a BO bottle, its spot on.
