McCurdy Point

Post by Don-B »

On my way out to Discovery Bay yesterday we went by McCurdy point.
Its half way from Point Wilson to Discovery Bay.
I was wondering if anyone has dove there?
I have fished off there a few times but never dove it.
I do realize it would be a very current sensitive site and only could be dove at slack on a good day.
It seems like there's a lot of structure there .
Any thoughts?

I have dove Pt. Wilson Reef a couple of miles East of McCurdy Pt. which is probably similar . We did it as a drift dive off a live boat. I've embedded MZ's video of it from the day that we dove the Alaska Reefer.

I have no experience with that area but I looked it up and there is a really deep hole on the northwest side of the navigation buoy and it really drops of fast so It might be a good spot and you could always tie off to the buoy. Shorward of the buoy is pretty shallow. In addition to currents it would be wind sensitive as well because of it's exposed location. If you go let me know. I'm curious about that big drop off. That's a 400 foot drop from the buoy!

here is the chart

We've tried twice to dive it, but the conditions have always been against us.
It's a good day.... nobody died!

I have a hunch that like most of that area it would be inadvisable to do without a live boat. That area has some nasty and unpredictable currents.

It was just a thought since most of the structure is in 30-70ft range.
I figured there might only be a few days a year that the conditions would be right.
A live boat would be a must and it would probably be a one and done dive.
Even when the tides and currents would be good the wind and waves could be bad.
I've spent a lot of time fishing in the waters up there and have a great respect for it.
I will put this on my to-do list and maybe one day I will be able to pull it off.
