Oregon Coast Aquarium Class, Sat May 26th!

Post by nwscubamom »

Note: Due to my frazzled brain, I got the dates wrong. It's really going to be on Sat, May 26th, not the 5th like I had originally posted.

Just a reminder to all of you who wanted to go last time (or for any other interested divers!), but weren't able to, and wanted to set your sights on the next class - here it is!! All divers must have recent cold water diving experience to participate in the class.

I teach this class only a few times each year, and it's a really cool opportunity to actually dive in the exhibits at the Oregon Coast Aquarium! Yes, YOU can be the one waving back to aquarium visitors through the glass! Little kids will adore you! Everyone loves watching the divers.

The morning is spent learning about Pacific NW Fish and invertebrates, with the chance to do a 'dry dive' treasure hunt. (wander around and look for specific things in the exhibits). Then after lunch, it's time to hop into the exhibits!

The cost is $140 and there's only room for 6 divers in the class, although others are welcome to participate in the classroom sessions only, for a reduced price.

If you have questions, please post them here, because others might be wondering the same thing you are!

More info and registration info on my website:

If I wasn't going to be heading to the Snake River for a week of bass fishing, I'd probably sign up. Guess I'll have to catch the next one.

Hi Janna,

I wanted to do the class.. But I don't have any money =(
I thought things were going to turn around for me a little sooner than this, but it took 2 months longer to sell my house than I had hoped. So I am still in the hole. waa for me :-({|=

Some day I hope to be able to do this with you, because it sounds like so much fun. And I really don't need the excuse to go down to the Oregon coast. I am sorry I can't make it!

I hope you have fun.. Cheers,
Holly

Janna-

Do you know if the 6 diver spots have filled up yet? If we take the class, is there some sort of cert that we get for completing it?

I don't think they've filled the class, but I am not sure exactly how many spots are left. You'd have to call Vallorie at 541-867-3474, Ext. 5302. She handles the registration for us - very nice!

And at this time, no, there is no cert card that you receive for taking this course, although we've toyed with making it into a specialty class - but neither Richard nor myself has jumped through the paperwork hoops to turn it into a specialty course at this time.

We played phone tag, and Vallorie didn't mention how many spots there were left open. She just said there was space available.

Ah, no prob. Be forewarned, and she may have mentioned this to you, that if they don't fill enough spots they'll cancel. Just so you know!

She didn't mention it, so thanks for the warning. Is that common? I would think divers would jump at the chance to dive in the aquarium.

It happens probably about 50% of the time. Since they can't afford to run the class with any less than 6 people, if someone cancels at the last minute, they're up a creek I guess.

We run the class about 4 times a year, and we wind up teaching it about twice.

I just heard today that the course is now full, but they are taking standby registrations! Just thought you'd like to know!

Are we only going to do one dive? Or is there time to squeeze in two?

Hey Janna: I took the couse several back in 2002 and then worked a couple of years there as a diver. They issued a PADI cert for the course, it was called Habitat Diver. Underwater Works in Tigard did it. But the course was a bunch more (Lkike $300+). Also a dive shop in Eugene was holding the course also.

Hi Chuck,

Different course altogether. The Habitat Course trains you to become a volunteer diver at the aquarium - our course is just for fun and to introduce you to the whole aquarium experience.

Nick, you will be doing only one dive - no time to squeeze in two!
