helmet info.

Post by Dusty2 »

All you cavers out there. I am getting a HD cam similar to the go pro and I am considering helmet mounting it so I don't lose it. Any suggestions on a secure way to mount it?

I just picked up one of these and was going to try it on the club dive Saturday that I wasn't able to make. Maybe in another week or so.

But it's for an actual GoPro mount.

YES! I am so thrilled that someone besides me uses that site. Its use as a sarcastic tool is truly brutal =P

It's humorous, but I'm not using it as sarcasm outside of "You could have looked this up", but more of a "This is how Cave Divers would figure out an answer to that question" link.

I don't know any cavers or cave divers using GoPros on helmets. (and I know quite a few people in both categories). The motion tends to be jerkier than you might like for a diving or cave video. And you have to align the light with the cam.

I've seen video of it done, but I agree about the jerkiness. I used to helmet mount a video camera for skydiving, and it took about fifty or so jumps with the camera to get used to shooting video that didn't look like a squirrel on meth.

FWIW, I am anti-helmet in the caves unless scootering, and even that not so much, but the GoPro mounts are pretty excellent stuff. If they can hold up at 200 mph in head down free fall, I'd have no qualms about them in the caves on my head. Of course, if you have a scooter, it's a way better and more stable platform.
There are no stupid questions, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots...

How about a well sterilized 1/4-20 tee nut?

I finally got to try it out. Whatever I had kept me out of the water for a couple of weeks - I was really sick. Then there were things to do around the house, a race car to sell, you know, life.

If I didn't know it was there, I wouldn't have known it was there. No noticeable (at least to me) drag or anything. It fit me well enough, though I think I'll trim the top of my mustache next time - just a little seepage. It seems well made, nothing chintzy on it. Working on the videos now; since it's a Hero, not a 2 or 3, they're dark. :)
