EPIC Vacation and Key Largo

Post by Bric Martin »

My wife and I just returned from the Caribbean and a great vacation.

We flew to Miami and spent a week on NCL’s cruise ship the EPIC. We went to St Maarten, St Thomas, and Nassau. Our boat was beautiful, the entertainment is fantastic, and there is always something to do. Cruising is not for everyone, but my wife is a non-diver so this makes for a great vacation for both us. I dive in most of the ports, and she shops with her girlfriends.

The diving in St. Maarten and St Thomas was better than I expected. The operators were relaxed and the boats were big and roomy, not cattle boats. Each stop had a similar site. One had a broken old barge and the other had some old military quarters that were sunk. They had been used as bombing practice and were broken and scattered across a wide are, perfect for coral growth.

The cruise was really fun! The ship had great entertainment. We saw the Blue Man group; the ship had a Cirque De Sole dinner show, and music and comedians throughout the ship. All in all it was a great trip!

Our next week was more about diving. My father in-law lives on the gulf side of Florida. After I spent a couple of days with the family I drove down to Key Largo for some great diving. I dive with Ocean Divers. This is my third trip with them, they are really top notch. I book all my dives and lodging with them, so it is really simple. My room is about 100 feet from the boat and it has a really nice view of the marina. The location makes it really relaxed and convenient.
There are 2 types of diving in Key Largo. There are the wrecks and very shallow reefs. We did multiple dives on both the Spiegel Grove and the Duane. Each year there is more coral on the wrecks. The wrecks are fun to poke around on; you never know what you may see. The reefs are spur and groove channels with short little walls that a covered with life. There are massive schools of fish in Key Largo; it gives you the feel of an aquarium dive. From a safety point of view the reef dives are one long safety stop, the reefs are about 20-25 the entire dive.

At the end of each day I cross the highway and go to a restaurant called Snook’s. The sunsets are truly spectacular and Snook’s has great view across the bay to the west. There is usually some great music playing and they have Corona! Key Largo is really a cool place to visit; I can’t wait to go back!

This was a great vacation and I really can’t wait for the next!

Simply wonderful, Bric! It's been about 20 years since Ginny and I last hit Key Largo...this has me thinking!

Nice report and pictures. Brings back memories of some really good diving out of Key Largo, especially the Duane.

Nice! I really like the last u/w shot, and the nudi.
Looks fun. 'Tis always good to have options that allow you to dive on a vacation with a non-diver wife :) Was the cruise kid friendly?

I don't know how old your kids are, but I would say the cruise was kid friendly. They have a pretty decent pool with some big slides on the deck. For teenagers they have a really nice area with video games and a rock climbing wall. There is always something to do while on the ship.

Wonderful report!

...and it shows that you can combine cruising and scuba, a great compromise for those with NDS (Non-Diving Spouses).
