Best B.S. story you've heard

Post by Greg Jensen »

I'm sure any of you with much diving experience has encountered it in a parking lot before or after a dive: someone coming up to talk to you and giving you some total b.s. story about their own diving exploits. Here's my own favorite.

Back when the Edmonds oil pier was still around, a "former diver" came up to us as we geared up and told us what a hot shot diver he used to be. Then he told us how he "had to quit because of my ears. Speared a 200 pound ling cod that dragged me down to 200 feet, and blew out both my eardrums. But I still landed the son of a bitch."

So let's hear some of the lines you've gotten over the years. Stories from dive shop 'groupies' (you know the type, always hanging around the LDS but never appearing to actually get wet) also qualify.

I heard this one on the East Coast: "I was doing a solo dive from my boat on a deep wreck. I looked over the side and the current was only 5 knots so I jumped in." :bs:
Happy to be alive.

Heard in a shop on Maui, I came across a f"@'ing huge Octo! As he holds his hands about a foot apart.

I can't wait to hear some of these stories. So far all the stories I have heard re either backed up by video or are easy to believe because they were not "amazing". If you know what I mean.

I was getting gas a couple of years ago at a station here in Port Angeles and the attendant told me of how him and his dad used to free dive down to the bottom of the Straits halfway between here and Victoria and pick up 20lb gold bars from an old spanish shipwreck when he was a kid. He was even willing to show me where they got them if I took him out on my boat. He told me they could only grab 10 or so per dive but assured me with scuba gear I could bring back at least 20 per dive and there were still thousands down there.

Well, MAYBE this one's true, but....
This old guy hobbling with a cane said he and his buddy used to dive the Columbia River up near Beacon Rock, at this big deep hole. They went down, and the bottom looked like there were giant logs moving around, and came FACE TO FACE with a gigantic eyeball - it was a massive 20 foot sturgeon.
His buddy freaked out, bolted to the surface, got bent, and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Man, some of the very best ones I've ever heard happened right here on this site!

A previous member of this board says he has seen 30 sixgills in total. On occasion more than one on a dive! (unbaited)

Not sure if it is BS. He definitely has seen a lot but 30? This was years ago when there were a lot more. A lot of the sightings were at Owen's beach, same place same time, day after day.

Watch out on those swims to the DK, you may very well receive a lesson born in blood

About 10 years or so ago I was fueling up my boat at the Stanwood exit and a guy about 18 walks up and starts chatting about diving. As an Explorer (Boy Scouts) his scoutmaster showed them a cave that was under Camano Island State Park. You entered from a wall and it even went up to an air chamber somewhere under the park.

I'd like to say I didn't spend any time looking for the entrance....
