Mike's Beach is awesome!!!

Post by Jeremy »

Had an opportunity to stay at Mike's Beach for the first time with friends....what a great time! My non-diving wife and kid had a blast in our little cabin right on the water. The location provided for easy access to flagpole...an extraordinary site, as well as the house reef. Octopus Hole and Sund Rock were nearby. Simply had a great time and highly recommend a dive trip to Mike's Beach! :)

+1 on Mikes Beach. We did our open water in 2003 there. Became friends with Mike and Illiana over the years. Those little cabins are really cool. Have taken my non diving kids there for the weekend. His movie theater is kinda cool too!

Yes it was! First 15 feet or so was muddled with rain but under that we had 40 ft plus!

Laura...no, not yet. I was pleasantly surprised how well some of the cloud sponge close ups turned out!

I was at Mike's last weekend, too. For a while there the place was getting pretty run down but it's in much better shape now.

Mike's Beach is amazing... my best local night dive was at Flag Pole with Bill. We watches a huge GPO hunting for some time.
The ocean is a lousy teacher. First you get a test, then the lesson.

+1 for Mike's Beach Resort. I was last there in September 2014 with Coll, Janney, and my wife. After our first night dive were surface swimming back in and looking up I could clearly see the Milky Way. Next time I want to grab the RV with the hot tub (if it's still there). Great video!

We have reservations for Memorial day and I have questions I'd love help with.
  • We own one tank each. Should we rent 2nd tanks or does filling there mean one tank is enough?
  • How do you physically get from the resort to Sund Rock and Octopus Hole? (Do you drive or do they run a boat)
  • Do you need to think about tides at all or is any time good to dive?
  • We kayak, too (not as part of scuba). Is there good kayaking around there too?
This will be our first recreational visit to the Hood Canal area and our first Puget Sounds dives away from Alki and Edmonds.

One tank works but it depends on how much you want to dive.
They are usually pretty fast getting things filled.

Sund Rock and Octopus Hole you would need to drive to
For Sund Rock you need to pay at Hoodsport N Dive
For Octopus Hole its just a wide spot in the road

Tides are generally not a concern in Hood Canal -- Unless you are doing something like a surface swim to Flagpole.
Its usually a boat dive but you can do it from shore (Mikes has an access point ask them about it)

Good place to Kayak

Another option for you in Hood Canal is jumping on the Pac Adventures Charter out of Pleasant Harbor.
That's some great diving!

I'd take a second tank for Sund Rock. It's a site worth doing a couple of dives on, and it would be preferable to not have to go for fills during your SI.

If you'd prefer not to rent a couple tanks for the whole weekend, you might be able to just rent them for the day at Hoodsport N Dive when you go in to pay your Sund Rock entry fee.
