Titan Miss Silo Dive

Post by bradmond »

I dove the Titan 1 missile silo on Saturday. It was a fun experience that some NWDC members might want to do. If there is enough interest then we can get something set up. Just need to see who would want to go and when. I will find out the max number that can go. The site is near Royal City which is about 2 hour drive from North Bend. I went in the morning and came home the same day.

It's an interesting dive ... one of those checklist things. It's a good thing to plan on a week-end when the tides are too huge for most local dives.

I guess I'm still curious about this one. It's a long drive, but a unique dive site from the sound of it.

I like doing it this time of year when viz is crappy and on a bad exchange weekend. Head over to Lake Chelan and hit the Sheep Boats and Monument Wall for one day...then the Missile Silo for the second day.

Bonus points if the weather is great in eastern Washington! :)

Curious as to why? I mean yeah the singles worked fantastic but I cant think of where you would be hindered. Maybe the second silo with that smaller opening?

You could dive doubles if your buddy dives dubs too. After about 30 minutes, the dive becomes boring, at least for me, and all you do is go in circles or etch your name on the beams or wall (if you really have the urge). Also, the DM accompanying the dive, who is mostly sitting on one of the beams (like Spiderman) with an extra tank (in case of emergency) will tap on the beam when it's time to end the dive, which doesn't last longer than 45 mins. Usually, you drop down first near the bottom and careful enough not to silt it, then work your way up. I dove the Silo with two HP 100's, but wished I could have used my two HP 80's. Just my two cents, and peeps who dive with me know I'm a fish. :)

I agree 100%, HP80's would work very well at this site. It's very interesting to check this out but with no critters and limited space, 45 minutes is long enough. I'd like to go with a group from NWDC if enough want to check it out.

I just reviewed my logs on this dive when I got home.
1. Dive no. 1, Silo 3 = deepest depth at 104 FFW, 34 minutes of dive time.
2. Dive no. 2, Equipment room = deepest depth at 28 FFW, 9 minutes of dive time.
3. Dive no. 3, Silo. 2 = deepest depth at 105 FFW, 34 minutes of dive time.

They let us dive as long as we wanted, you just work it out in advance. I dove over an hour.

Funny! Ask me how much air was left in my two tanks.

Yeah unless you are filming (which most of us were) you can pretty much get the jest of the silo in under 45 minutes. An hour in the silo??? I would have been asleep.
I encourage people to really go macro when looking though. I mean it was pretty cool to think "wow there were people walking around here, twisting knobs and what not." Seeing gauges, and levers and circuit boards and such was pretty cool.

Only something I would want to do once.

Doubles are not an optimal choice for this dive. First off, because you don't need them ... you're never going to use that much gas, and you always have direct access to the surface. Second, you have to get them down and back up through that little tube of an entry. And finally, because you have to walk down the access ways in waist deep water ... often balancing on pipes or other uneven surfaces that present tripping hazards, and the weight of doubles is only going to make that more potentially hazardous than it has to be.

As with any dive, you should choose your gear to be appropriate to the dive profile and conditions. Choosing doubles in this case provides more disadvantages than advantages ...

They will be fixing the opening to the one silo this summertime. We couldnt get through it with our rebreathers on. Had I known that, I'd have skipped the dive. Its one tight opening and made the day 1 expensive single dive....But even that one silo, there are many many nooks and crannies to explore and play around in. I could have spent longer than the hour exploring them all.

And yes, there are challenges on the approaches for both silos. None that presented any great challenge, except the one point where you have to hang onto a rope and step down. Kinda lost my balance and turtled. David (DM) had to help me sit back up... That provided some level of amusement for everyone...

we also did the overhead area, but I did not care for that at all, as it silts easily, and can be very disorienting. Guess I'll never be a cave diver...

All set up for diving the Titan Silo on June 17th. There are a few openings available if anyone wants to check it out.
