You know you wanna.... (dive with salmon sharks in Alaska)
I have nothing to do with the operation... just randomly surfed into the site the other day while doing research for another project

Alaska sure can be beautiful. Most if it looked familiar, but there was a nudibranch which flashed across the screen at 1:00 which was new to me. Anyone?

Nah....dad used to go fishing for salmon sharks. I am not sure Id be willing to dive with those toothy bastids.

That looks awesome. I didn't realize they got that big.

I always wondered if you could dive with them. Like a Great White and Mako. I'm totally in!

I noticed that too....oldsalt wrote:Alaska sure can be beautiful. Most if it looked familiar, but there was a nudibranch which flashed across the screen at 1:00 which was new to me. Anyone?

Alaska diving is off the hook amazing.
I'd be down for this. Seems to me that viz was good, and that if water wasn't murky and you don't look like a salmon they pretty much wouldn't be interested in you.
But then it is a wild animal.... dang sea lions worry me more.

I posted a story about my sons diving off Turn Island in the San Juans while I stayed topside in an inflatable. They encountered a salmon shark and decided to get out of the water. It followed them to the surface and circled the inflatable. It was quite menacing.

Oh man! I am totally in! We should get a group together and start planning. Of course, if I get that new camera I've been eyeballing I'll have to push this out until the savings account is replenished. Or I'll just get a second job working nights and weekends. There! Problem solved! Let's do it!
Re: You know you wanna.... (dive with salmon sharks in Alaska)
My friend Richard is running a trip up there July 2-8, 2016, with a photo workshop (note: over fourth of july). It would cost $2500 for 7 days and 6 nights
PM me and I can get you more details. Bookings are needed soon. I probably will not go myself though, I have too many trips in the books already!

This place isn't getting great reviews :(
They didn't give their clients much opportunities to dive with the sharks. The sharks that were around were very skittish, yet the operation had no rebreather support to counter that.
Plus diving in that particular areas isn't great for the non-shark dives :(

Re: You know you wanna.... (dive with salmon sharks in Alaska)
A friend was just there for a week and got some phenomenal shots. Its not really diving with sharks as much as it is snorkeling while they bring the sharks to you. I saw some good shots looking 'up' without any bubbles so either someone was good at breath hold or there was at least one CCR diver kicking around. The Salmon sharks don't respond the way we normally think of sharks as I understand it, as in they don't come in for chum, it has to be moving 'prey' to get their attention and yes, they are known to be skittish as heck, whether or not CCR would help, well who knows, but that is part of the allure of a trip like this, will you get lucky and get 'the shot' or not Whether or not this trip is something that most people would consider spending money for has to do with their expectations I imagine. Like some of the other more obscure shark diving trips, these things can be hit or miss - like Greenland shark for example where you just sit there and cross your fingers and hopefully get lucky (and there is nothing to dive otherwise), or Basking sharks in Scotland where you hope the boat can find some when you are there (though if none show at least there is the seal dive).

Ok, good to hear Laura. Did they post photos?
I have friends going this week too, we'll see what they say too.
