Petrel 1 still worth buying?

Post by bschnabel »

I have found a good deal on a used Shearwater Petrel 1, under $500. Is it worth buying, or shell out the extra $100+ or so on the used market for a Petrel 2? From what I have found there aren't many differences between the two, but info is slim. If anyone has a used Shearwater that they are willing to part with cheap let me know. I will be using it for rec diving, some Nitrox. My current computer is having backlight issues and want to upgrade to one that will last me through whatever diving I can do, and have OLED or LED lights.

Thanks

Only real difference is the compass. I thought I saw a used petrel on add helium pre owned, you might check.

How much under $500? $499 probably not quite worth that IMHO. $400 I would say is fair. $350 is a steal.

You don't need the compass and its otherwise functionally identical. Just be sure to update the software, shearwater is frequently sending software updates. Its a snap to update via Bluetooth.

the ones on AH are 500$, personally I'd offer them less.

If you find a good price, go ahead and buy it. The Petrel v1 vs v2 difference is minor. Even the much older Predators are great computers and still well supported with Software updates and service by Shearwater.

You'll be much happier with a reliably supported Canadian shearwater more than any other made for a few years then discontinued competitor

Thanks, found a 35 dive petrel 2 and pulled the trigger. Think I got an ok deal, it looks brand new. Can't wait to get in the water.

Any idea if having a sola light on the same hand as my computer will affect the compas?

I have the Perdix and have used a Sola on the same hand and haven't had/noticed any problems with the compass.
