Hood Recommendations

Post by Tom Nic »

What hood do you like in our waters and why? Are there brands you think are better than others? Or is it just a matter of finding one that fits your noggin?!?

-For cold cold water, Sea Otter comes up over and over (I believe they come in 12mm?)

-I have a big melon, and Whites was the most comfortable I could find, a mix of 7m, 5m, and 2. Lately with a huge weight loss my Hood likes I have a growth on top of my head (yes, that's the hood, not my head). I currently wear a large. Perhaps a smaller White's?

-Any other brands you use / love?

Thanks!

And I believe Eight in Des Moines carries them if Tacoma Scuba doesn't.

I got a 7mm Bare Ultrawarmth hood recently with the red fleecy celliant liner. It's pretty luxurious. I've been dealing with a leaky dry suit the last few months because I've been too lazy/cheap to deal with it... and I haven't gotten even the slightest bit cold since I got it, even on a 75 min dive in March where I was wringing the water out of my undergarments after. I may have a higher tolerance for cold and wet though than most, so take that with a grain of salt!

Spyder K01 makes a 8 and 5 mm hood in various sizes. Can order online and they have sizing chart. 8 mm here is the best I’ve found! Highly recommended, worth it but a bit pricey

The Ko1 hoods are good, but really strain my Jaw until they get stretched out. My favorite hood, if they just made it in a non bibbed version, is the Waterproof H1 10/5mm

- I got a good squirt in my mouth
- I would imagine that there would be a large amount of involuntary gagging
- I don't know about you but I'm not into swallowing it

I'm also a big fan of the Waterproof H1. It much warmer than the various 8mm hoods I used to use. I recently got a second one with the higher visibility orange and reflective stripes.
The bib can be carefully trimmed with a pair of sharp scissors. I just cut off an inch around the back and seal the edge with some neoprene cement.

I tried that too, but then the neck was to too short, although I cut the entire bib off.

I might have to try the helmet hood from otter bay
