Pacific Red Octopus - Rare Capture

Post by Scubie Doo »

Last Thursday for ThThTh I had a rare encounter. I was at the battlefield my my two buddies (gdog and Val) when I saw a tiny Pacific Red Octopus. Over the years I have seen thousands of PR Octos. However, they usually scoot around and when they swim, they jet off and ink. However, this little critter decided to move up into the water column and fan out its tentacles, like a Stubby Squid. It was super brief and I only managed (2) shots before it went back to its normal behavior. Good times :-)

Nice snaps!!
I had a red octo go in the water column once too. In my case the red octo was pinned between a diver, the carousel boat and a GPO on the prowl. To escape he went into the water column and swam away. I got one shot.

I'm way out of my area of expertise, but doesn't that little beauty have horns? Do Reds have horns?

It was a really small one. Maybe the size of a quarter.

Yes they do. The distinctive characteristic are the three little “eye lashes” under the eye. That is a solid way to ID a pacific red.

I did see one at Three Tree getting attacked by rock fish. But this one made a display like a stubby, I hadn’t seen that before.

Fantastic shots! Wow. The technical difficulty of nailing this shot seems inconceivable!
