Sunrise & The Narrows, 9-19-07

Post by Tom Nic »

I was looking for the thread that had this trip report on it so that I could add this to the end, but I couldn't find it... I've been out of town for while and couldn't get to the pics sooner. Don't mean to start a new thread for an old dive, my apologies.

Had a great two dives with Bandito and A2Z. It was my first time diving Sunrise, and drifting the Tacoma Narrows for the second dive was a great way to do dive #200! Since #100 was in February I'm pretty happy with the number of dives I've been able to do. Thanks Amy for putting together the mid-week!

Some pictures are here

It was fun to buddy up with Seth, our crazy wet-suit diver! Thanks Seth for putting up with a photographer on the dive. (Drop me a note for which pics you want.)

Sunrise was a delight, as advertised. I'm still not sure what actually constitutes a "reef", but I think I heard that Sunrise is an actual "reef"? Anyone know what that means? Drifting the Narrows was nice... slack was timed a bit better so we got to spend some time around the large "caison" blocks there.

Here's one or two pictures...

Thanks for the kind words all...

Sunrise was very cool. We had a light current, and I'd like to do a couple of dives on this site on a true slack. LOTS of life there. It was actually kind of hard to decide what NOT to take a picture of as there were so many potential good scenes to be had. I only saw a couple of the Gunnels & Mosshead Warbonnetts (Seth kept interrupting me to come take a picture of a huge octopus :supz: so I could never finish my photo session with the Warbonnett... "Let's see, do I ignore my buddy and keep shooting the cooperative Warbonnett or.... nah, it's our first dive together I better follow him.") Anyway, you get the picture. CarDiver got some great gunnel and mosshead shots on this dive as well.

Bassman has been trying to talk me and my lazy old bones into doing this as a shoredive for the longest time. Our walk to the beach a couple of months ago underlined for me how cool this site can be, and how rediculously long of a haul it would be to get my sorry carcass and 150lbs of gear back up that hill. ](*,) He does have a very cool dive cart that I think would work just fine, so get better Keith and we'll do it soon! Pick a good tide day, bring a couple of tanks, and plan on spending a few hours to make it worth it. Or just boat dive it for those of you who have a boat, which, Alas :-({|= I do not.

I really want to do both sites again... and again, and again, and... \:D/

Many of us locals refer to it at "the petting zoo".
There is always a ton of life to be seen at Sunrise.
One of the reasons it is a favorite of mine. My camera is never idle.

Seth ~ Thanks again for pointing out the Wolf pair. I have a pic that looks very much like Tom's.

There is no shame in leaving gear as you hike back up and returning to get it after you are out of your drysuit.
You can also stop for a rest when you need it. Have had many divers do that.

(I have dropped weights before ~ just don't tell any of my dive buddies)
