WHAT AN AMAZING DIVE!!!!

Post by kwbyron »

WOW! it was INCREDIBLE!!! I posted a little about Jake and I's dive in the equipment section, but didn't mention this portion because i wanted to do some research first. I was pretty sure I spotted this elusive creature, but it's SO rare that I wanted to make sure, THANK GOODNESS JAKE GOT A PICTURE! That's right we found the ancient Dildiscious gigantis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For those of you who don't know (few besides invertebrate marine biologist do), this is a very rare type of sea cucumber. Most Echinoderm's skeleton consists of ossicles that are jointed for movement, but they are able to lock down when threatened or feeding. D. gigantis is believed to have evolved under constant predation, and as a result fused together it's ossicles to form a rigged, bumpy armor plating. Some evolutionary biologist actually think this may be a living link to the development of exoskeletons that made insects so successful! A truly remarkable find during the dive...just amazing.

Well done! I'm really tired, and I didn't pick up on the clues until I saw the pic- you got me!

yeah, I was baffled when I found it. I could hear Jake laughing through his regs, I should have stuffed it in between his tank and BC so it fell out on the way to the car!!!!

I thought about posting it under "proof of the existence of mermaids"

Ok I was very into it and was very impressed being that I am so clueless about marine life. When I saw the picture I could not stop laughing.I wonder if someone flushed it as to not get caught with it? :toimonster:

Or something like that.

B'cause this one will be hard to top!

Still waiting for Loretta's final thought / reaction.

That's what you get from 4 years of marine biology degree, the ability to write very creatively on the internet.....

For anybody interested, we did have a nice dive. This was at the Mukilteo lighthouse park. We didn't do the wall, instead we dove over closer to the boat launch, as there were quite a few cars parked in front, so it seemed safe enough. Aside from the usual cast of characters (craps, shrimp, starfish and sole) we came across this little guy in around 50fsw -

and a little further up slope, this guy -

Next week we're gonna try out the langley tire reef.....
