Non current sites...
Whats the best boat dive site around Whidbey island that would not be current sensitive? Any suggestions...?
It looks like this weekend is gonna be pretty much a big current weekend all day long....

Others will chime in that know Whidbey well, but my first reaction (given the topography of the area) is that one doesn't really exist.
Langley maybe?
Langley maybe?

Langley has the most stuff to see. You could try up on Fidalgo. Bowman Bay area is doable at slack.

Re: Non current sites...
Unfortunatly, Slack this weekend is at 7:30am and 3:30 pm....
Hence the need of a non current site as we will be diving mid day...

Re: Non current sites...
The biggest problem is that a lot of the possible dive sites off Whidbey Island are just slopes of silt with sea pens. You might PM Jan K, as I think he has the most experience on and off Whidbey, but this is the challenge of Puget Sound diving. There are simply some weekends where the best places to dive are not very interesting, unless you are a critter person who is willing to look for the little stuff, or the things you don't see unless you dive over the muck. Sometimes it's fun to go investigate a site where nobody habitually dives, but I think you guys are low on experience to do that. Talk to Jan -- maybe he'll have some info for you.

try asking lonewolf. i heard he knows of a few places to get in the water.
Re: Non current sites...
Gedney Island barges I have been told can be protected on an ebb, but I have heard of current stories there so I dive it on slack tide. Langlely is ok, fidalgo I hear has terrible vis right now. Looking at the exchange it's hard to say there will be slack anywhere.

And the forcast continues to get better.... Now calling for rain and 18-25kt winds. This is forcasted to produce 3-5 foot wind waves....Makes for rough boat diving....
Re: Non current sites...
Makes for unsafe Boat diving! I would say Pass on the boat dive Idea. It's not going to be a fun day no matter where you go.

Shouldn't be much current in the lake....
Re: Non current sites...
That's where were headed, the Dawn/Hauler on Saturday. Figured with the crappy tides it was a good day to lounge in the Lake.Nwbrewer wrote:Shouldn't be much current in the lake....

Nice. Probably a little out of the OP's depth range though. There's always the sunken forest.
Re: Non current sites...
Whats the depth?

Of the Dawn/Hauler, or the forest?
Re: Non current sites...
Yeah, was just making an off-handed comment, not a destination suggestion for the OP.Nwbrewer wrote:Nice. Probably a little out of the OP's depth range though. There's always the sunken forest.
Dawn is ~110 ffw to the mud, Hauler is ~120 ffw to the mud.

Definitely 18/45, or even 15/55!dsteding wrote:Dawn is ~110 ffw to the mud, Hauler is ~120 ffw to the mud.

10/70, don't breathe until 15 feet. Duh.BDub wrote:Definitely 18/54, or even 15/55!dsteding wrote:Dawn is ~110 ffw to the mud, Hauler is ~120 ffw to the mud.

The problem with those isn't the depth...it's the fact that the viz usually sucks, and there's lots to get tangled up on with 'em. You can be inside the Dawn without even knowing you've penetrated it.dsteding wrote: Yeah, was just making an off-handed comment, not a destination suggestion for the OP.

No kidding-it is dark, dark, dark down there.

Re: Non current sites...
I treat dives in the lake with about a +30' factor. A 70' dive in the lake feels like a 100' dive in the Sound. YMMV.dsteding wrote:No kidding-it is dark, dark, dark down there.

Yes, 150 feet in the lake is uber dark-the Bomber is still a great dive, however.Nwbrewer wrote: I treat dives in the lake with about a +30' factor. A 70' dive in the lake feels like a 100' dive in the Sound. YMMV.
The joy of helium, I don't think I'd want to be below about 80 feet in the lake without it.

Re: Non current sites...
So I can literally hit a golf ball into the lake from my home (and I can't hit a golf ball for anything) so of course the Lake is an appealing dive destination for me, BUT I am only OW certified. Anything there I can do?
