General banter about diving and why we love it.

I don't have time to check out other boards unless google directs me there.
Everything I need to know is here or at the dive site that I'm diving at.
Meaning, I learn alot, after every dive. :supz:

things i learned on scubaboard:

- obama wasn't born in the united states
- global warming isn't real
- there is no evidence for the theory of evolution
- what it looks like to shoot a scuba tank with a high powered rifle
- i'm in need of rescue if i wear my mask on my forehead

ummm.... i'm sure i can think of a few other things....

Yeah I've always thought that was a strange rule :dontknow:

Although I don't think we use the "Diver Okay?" or "I'm OK!" signal at the surface enough.

But every time I've asked with my hand on my head I always have gotten a return signal of the "hand on head"
I think if you (a diver or dive support) are on a boat or shore, you should know how to ask surfacing divers if they are okay.

I don't think the mask on the forehead is a good indicator of a distressed diver.

just my 2 cents. :salute:

This doesn't make much sense here, but this rule/signal is a very good one in tropical boat diving scenarios.

I warned you... if you try to bring up War Hammer on SB now, no one knows what you're talking about.

"The Warhammer" will never die. Every so often it shows it's :bootyshake: . Snicker. But you only need to see it one time.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

I learned early on the tune out the yapping herd and listen to the one's in the know. Luckily we have such a great bunch of knowledgeable people here that I don't go to SB anymore.

No real concensus on regular divers but for DM's and Instructors the concensus is 2-3 yrs of work then they give it up.
Crap...good thing you told me. That does it...I'm going to have to quit. I'm a few years too far in...

Seriously...I use SB for the Instructors Forum (invisible unless you're an instructor). This has been HUGELY valuable to me as I've gained so many new ideas for how to work with students when they have issues. And it's a place where pros can let their guard down and talk about things such as burn-out, stress and candidly talk about student incidents.

The reason it's invisible...we still need all the "I wanna be an instructor with white sandy beaches folks" and if they heard about the burn out, they may not be willing to invest the $15k to become an instructor.

As a side note: My editor at XRay Magazine is now receiving a news release every week for a "new social media" site for divers somewhere in the world. ALL of them tout their ability to upload photo and video and help divers connect.

I think it's great!! With all of these divers doing "virtual diving" by keeping up on all of these sites, it means less stress on the worlds dive sites and a more pristine environment to come!

I noted that the people who came up with the 2-3 year consensus based on profiles I read where way past that themselves. Another one of the SBisms, there always seems to be more exceptions than rules.

15k I must of gotten the bargain basement prices. I think total of all training(OW-Instr) might have been 4k, now if you add boat charters, travel and hotels just for diving and all the BCD's, regs, tanks, masks, fins, wetsuits, computers and all the small stuff that I ended up buying because I forgot it,lost it or broke it, that makes 15k seem like a bargain.
