Taking a plunge

Post by Blaiz »

Hi everyone, I wanted to stop in and offer my greetings to everyone. I've been taking some dive classes, and have Open Water Certification dives next Saturday! Pretty excited to be here and doing this; it's been real fun so far.

I'm not sure how most people get into diving, but I paused at my local shop while out walking my dogs, asked a few questions, thought it over for a while, then came back a couple months later and started lessons. I don't have any dive buddies lined up, I'm a little worried about that, cause except for that pesky job thing, I have hours and hours and hours available to dive.

I've spent many hours already browsing this forum, I've learned quite a few fun tips, learning about the members. You all seem like quite a fun group of folks and I'm excited that one day I might be as veteran as you!

Welcome Kriss, You have started on an adventure that can last a life time and can be very addicting but I think you probably already know that if you have been reading this forum.

You'll find allot of folks to dive with here and lots of info and help. Just be nice and play by the rules and you will soon be on your way to many fun adventures that most only dream of and never do.

Welcome to the addiction! I wouldn't worry too much about dive buddies. I can think of at least two people off the top of my head on Whidbey Island, who are extremely active divers. This board is also an incredible resource for buddies. If you want to take a ferry, I'd be happy to meet you at Edmonds some day and show you around there.

I would take her up on that. She is one very well qualified dive buddy. If your hanging out at the Oak harbor dive shop you are sure to me Jan, pronounced yawn, A very good person to know especially if you develop a passion for the underwater critters. Then there is always a short ferry ride over to Port Townsend where I hang out. :angelblue:

Welcome to NWDC, Kriss!

There's no better place to hook up with dive buddies all around the PNW....and have a good time doing so!

I'll second that! :notworthy:

I'm still left wanting to learn some fancy finning techniques from LCF, now that I have some paddle type fins!
Oh well, Someday soon, I hope :dontknow:

Lynn, Did you ever get to do that video project? :smt064

thanks all! today I did my first two cert dives out at keystone. think the instructor was a little frustrated with conditions, but it's new and exciting enough that I was more like, wheeee!

Two more dives tomorrow, hopefully come up and swim into a certification card *crosses fingers*

Dashrynn yeah i was the girl at the shop, and i dang near asked you on the spot whether you were dash lolol

so yeah, i'm free to dive just about any day of the week, gonna look into night dives, navigation, some other fine training sessions! I intend to take y'all up on your offers to dive with newbies

hey all!

update: i did indeed get my official go, I'm now a certified open water diver!!! whooohoooo yaaay... but yeah, i suspect it's more like a learner's permit, and i have only barely begun to have some clue of what to do. yeah... so, i'm open all evening every day except tuesday and free on weekends, who wants to escort me?

p.s. a heartfelt apology to any and all critters on whose heads or homes I fin-slapped, knee-bashed, or face-planted this weekend. I'll get better, i promise!

Oh and take penopolypants up on that offer. She is a great mentor and genuinely fun person.

I am quickly running out of dive time here on Whidbey, so I am trying to cram as much diving as possible over the next 3 weeks. I might hit Langley or Keystone Tuesday afternoon/evening. Thursday starts the crabbing, but thats a boat dive and vis is usually about 3-4 feet once the silt starts flying. Not the best for a new OW cert, but you are welcome to tag along, hang in the boat, and splash if you want to.

Congrats on getting your cert!! :joshsmith: Now Practice practice practice!!! MMM's are a good place to start, Edmonds UW Sports has Discover Local Dives (free) at the UW Park most weekends led by my former Instructor Jerry and those are a great way to get your feet wet, just give them a call to sign-up... Many of the shops have dives going so check them out and have a great time!!! Feel free to pm me if you wish and I'd be happy to go most weekends and some eves...
