Northwest Dive Club

Has anybody dove Potlatch State Park? My son is having a open water cert.there 23rd of July. I don't know what is there or if I should even get in the water there, or just skip and go to Sund. Also where would anybody recommend staying for a couple of nights? I have stayed at Glen ayr and been pleased but it is kind of steep for six people. Any help would be appreciated.

There is sand, and some more sand, and then you might see some sand.

It is a really gently slope out to the buoys, then it drops pretty quick. When I last dove there, there were lots and lots of nudies to look at, including the largest Giant Nudibranch that I have ever seen, it was bigger than my light cannon.

You will see the typical sand dwelling creatures, but, not much structure.

I haven't dove it but from everyone I talked to coachrenz hit it pretty well. That's why they do classes there. No current, no critters and it's pretty hard to get very deep.

As far as a place to stay? if your camping you could stay right there at Potlatch. If your talking rooms try the Yellow house. I'm not sure what they get a night there but I know it can accommodate a good size group and there is a decent dive site right across the street and Hoodsport and Dive is only a couple of blocks away. Give them a call. They just might know of something in the area that is less pricey.

The Yellow House is also a bit pricey and is usually booked on weekends. You can still dive the Yellow House dive site, even if you don't stay there, if you ask the dive shop nicely and there isn't a class going on.

I think mikes beach resort has a house they rent too. The diving there is OK if there are not a lot of classes. South of there is Jorsted creek, which has a very steep, but short trail to the beach, and is one of my favorite shore dives. be careful of the oyster shells, they are hard on a dry suit. Sund rock is worth the price, its a great dive, and convenient to drive your gear to the beach. I think the sunrise motel in hoodsport is around 70 a night, for a room with two beds. Nuthin fancy, but they have places to rinse and dry your gear.

From what I've heard most people go to Potlatch to get crab.
