halp halp my camera's having seizures!

Post by Blaiz »

so i had a one gig memory card which took about 170 pics per card. Then I found that my landbound camera had an eight gig card. so sneakily, i switched them out and formatted the 8g to my camera. i discovered shortly that the 8gig card kept taking odd pictures and having card read errors on the camera. so i switched back to the 1gig card and formatted it back. all went well until last night's pictures. can someone help me figure out what the heck is going on?

i have no idea what is wrong with your camera, but that second picture is awesome in a 1970s abstract kind of way.

I just tried google and couldn't find anything. If not for the vertical stripe in the second photo, my first guess would be that the shutter speed is too fast for your strobes. It might be your buffer, some cameras will let you overshoot the buffer and you will get weird photos. Since it happened on both cards, it is probably not the cards. Make sure you are seating the card securely. Good luck.

Most cameras have a small memory on their own. If yours does try removing the card and just take a regular old picture in optimal conditions and see what you get. You'll have to download off the camera but that kind of problem should show up in the view screen.

not all of the pictures are coming out poorly, just some of them (the best ones, of course). i have a canon a 640, and frankly, dave's post just before mine is beginning to freak me out @@

I think the problem may be formatting in the camera. You should never use in camera formatting. Also trying to use an 8 meg card won't work and there is no need for one that big anyway. I would advise formatting both cards in your computer and don't try to use that 8 meg in the 640. At the time that cam was made 2meg was max and I know it is not compatible with the new HDHC cards which the 8 meg card may be.

So reformat the 1meg card in a PC and use it. Don't go above a 2meg card. That camera was a little touchy about what cards you use.

I thought your camera was an A640, which means fmerkel's idea won't work because that one doesn't have any internal memory. If you take the card out and turn it on it just gives you an error.

I suspect these cameras are just showing their age. Unfortunately for us and you, that means upgrading, which means getting new cases as well as cameras, which means a LOT more scuba units :crybaby:

And I think Dusty is right about the formatting, though we do use a 4 gig card in ours regularly. I haven't tried an 8 gig, but I suspect it might be a bit more than the camera can recognize.

I'm confused, if I read the original post correctly she went back to the 1 gig card. How would putting an 8 gig card in screw up the formatting on the 1 gig card? Makes me suspect something else is going on.

she went from a 1 gig to a 8 gig that she pulled from her land based camera and i can back up the information that dusty has given, also even if it isnt hdhc some electronics won't acknowledge that much memory being shoved into them.

I did find this link, http://www.iezzi.ch/archives/117. It's a long thread and I only glanced at it. The conclusion was jpeg corruption during transfer from the card to the computer. Are you shooting jpeg or raw? If you are shooting jpeg try a different computer and see if you have the same problem.

But you did say you formatted both cards in the camera, which was probably part of the problem.

Seaphilia: the A640 only stores in jpeg.

the answer to this question is the card... that camera will not except a card larger than 2 Gigs... I have had the same issues .. the camera wont handle anything larger than a 2 gig card , Because anything larger than an old skool 2 gig is HC format

Looky ..

I use PNY SDHC 4Gb in these cameras with no problem and have used the camera's formatting, no problem. You may want to try a different brand of SD card.
