Dome Project

Post by Scuba Scott »

Interested in learning what this structure is. Anyone know?

Life can be short and dives even shorter. Time off work will put it all in perspective.

Sea based X-Band radar for our National Missile Defense systems..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea-based_X-band_Radar

I believe they are dry-docked for repairs and maintenance.. They were tugged into the docks quite a while ago.. kinda popped up there like magic one day :)

I had no idea what they were either, saw them and asked at Cove2, some clever law-enforcement types knew what it was.

The West Seattle Blog had a pretty good story line going on it as it was coming in:

http://westseattleblog.com/2011/05/on-i ... band-radar

http://westseattleblog.com/2011/05/foll ... n-daylight

http://westseattleblog.com/2011/05/upda ... -radar-sbx

The sci-fi aficionado in me has been quite curious about it!

theres a very similar dome everyone calls the golf ball here in oak harbor

i suspect its main function is to cause my diving buddies to move away

i strongly suggest you avoid the one in seattle

They are multiplying. A second rig is arriving tonight.

West Seattle Blog Reports
It’s dominated the Harbor Island view for two months, and while it’s not scheduled to leave Vigor (formerly Todd) Shipyard for another month or so, you will see the SBX (military Sea-Based X-Band missile-detecting radar, aka “that thing that looks like a giant golf/ping-pong ball”) move around a bit this week.

That’s because, according to a marine-industry advisory obtained by WSB, a floating offshore-oil-drilling platform is coming into the shipyard, so SBX must move temporarily while the drilling rig is maneuvered into place. That rig is a story unto itself:

Diving. . . is an active physical form of meditation. It is so silent- You're like a thought.

SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES. NOT REALLY GOOD FOR
ANYTHING, BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN PUSHED DOWN THE
STAIRS.

the "2nd rig" is just a boring looking oil drilling platform. they were shuffling them around this afternoon.

They'd moved it out to a mooring yesterday ... wish I'd had a camera with me last evening at Cove 2 ... would've made a nice picture with Seattle in the background.

That thing's HUGE when you get a closer look at it ...

When I lived on Ford Island (Pearl Harbor, HI) this would moor right next to my house. From what I remember there is only one. My run in was when the "golf ball" was unloading off the Blue Marlin with the PH Harbor Patrol chasing us away from a divesite because we were too close (at least a couple of miles away).
