Sola 600's on sale...

I really want the 1200 though, but these lights are seriously sweet for being so small and the hand mounts.

No offense, but better is very subjective.

I personally dont like can lights. The Sola is alot of power in a much smaller package, and easily hand mounted.

It may not blot out the sun, but its size/weight versus lumens is very attractive.

I'm seriously trying hard not to pull the trigger on one.

Jeff,

FWIW, we have a SOLA 1200 that will be great for tropical diving, but I tried to use it as a primary light here during a night dive and quickly switched back to my Dive Rite can light. It just didn't cut it. YMMV, but I thought I'd share . . . especially since I have the model up from the one you mention.

The Sola is more a focus light or video light and therefor it has a wider beam than a can light.

Yes, it is way more diffuse--even on the spot beam setting. And since you'll always want it on the high setting, note that the run time is approximately 70 minutes. That wouldn't get me through 2 dives.

I thought you're going to stop making lights? It would be a shame if you stop making lights. I say, make another "Death Light".

The solas is a great little light for what it is but way pricy. I wouldn't consider it a primary but it can be used for that if you don't expect more than it is designed to do. My can light is very small and compact and will blow one of these away but you still have a cord and canister. However 4+ hours of burn time at 1200 lumins makes that canister pretty attractive. Especially when you can pop the old battery pack out and pop a fresh one in in less than a minute and be ready for 4 more hours of diving! :luv:

70m right now for me is 3 dives... :) well maybe 2 now once I get stuff sorted out.

Non replaceable batteries I guess though is kind of a deal breaker.

I've got my Big Blue 250 for a backup, and a UK SL4 L1 Eled for main, those are good enough.

If I ever start night diving, perhaps I'll consider a can light just for that. But night diving isnt very appealing to me.

3 dives = 70 min You definitely need some time with Bob! :smt064

70 min for me = must have been a short fill or fighting current most of the dive.

Hang in there and get those dive times up. I can make that SL4 into a serious light for small bucks when your ready.

I am not an enthusiastic night diver either but It is comforting to know you have a light you know will outlast you day or night.

Even on good viz days a strong dive light will make tons of difference in what you see vs what you miss.

Jeff,

What don't you like about a canlight?

I'm not going to pimp anyone's lights, but please consider a nice bright light with a narrow focus when you do decide to get a primary. Having the ability to signal your buddies during low vis conditions (night or just usual Puget Goo) I find to be very important to my comfort level during the dive. It saves a lot of craning my neck around, and frustration if my buddy and I can just use simple light signals to communicate.

You're still at the infancy of your sport diving career, take some time to look at what some of the other local divers (some with decades of experience and 1000's of dives) are using. There's almost always a good reason for it. I've bought and sold, (or failed to sell) quite a bit of gear because it was a "good deal", that turned out to not really work for what I wanted it for.

If my buddy is so far away from me I need a light canon to signal him, its probably someone I wont be diving with again.

If I'm diving with a group, perhaps I see an "occasional" need for a light canon, but that is overshadowed by lugging around a battery canister, and lamp for all the rest of my dives.

I just dont like stuff hanging off of me, unless its primary access gear.

"Too far" is a relative term in Puget Sound waters. Ten feet may be "too far" to signal someone depending ambient light and particulates in the water.

As a dive buddy, if you are farther away from me than visibility allows, its the same case. The light canon is merely overcoming poor buddy skills.

Sometimes sh_t happens, and when it does, you follow the lost buddy rules. You signal, wait for a response, and then hit the surface.

I've had strong buddy skills drilled into me since I first hit a pool. Its a religion down there, and I'm still a member :)
