Porpoise Bay Charters...

Post by Jeff Pack »

There is a trip to Strongwater retreat middle of June I was thinking about doing, but given viz is getting so crappy our way, will it be much better up that way?

It's always better up there. The Sound is a giant dead-end, whereas water flows around the island and through the passage. Not saying viz will be fantastic, just better than here, most likely. And- it's a crapshoot. Viz tends to suck in the Summer, except for when it doesn't. The algae blooms will have mass die offs, at random intervals. I have seen pretty close to 100' of horizontal viz here in the Summer on more than one occasion.

But it sure sucks right now. *sigh*

I'm heading up May 25th for the Memorial Day week-end ... it's an awesome place to dive. Kal and Ann run a first-class operation ...

Just go no matter what viz is like. You will have a great time with Kal and Ann. Joshua said it right visibility is always a crap shoot.

Yea, except if I wait until say Sep/Oct, its not a crapshoot.

... but then the weather becomes a crap shoot. There is no "perfect" time to schedule trips around here, Jeff ... you pick your times and take what you get.

Vis may be better but an early storm can blow you out

Strongwater is on Sechelt inlet which is a long narrow fjord. They rarely get blow out in winter, only when the wind blows right up or down the inlet. I have been there in summer and had good vis and been there in summer with braille like vis. Just go when its convenient, its worth diving there regardless.

Jeff,

I go to Strong Water twice a year. We do a fun dive in January where we always get about 90-100' of viz. I also teach a wreck class in August on the Chaud and we are always blessed with at least 30-50' even then.

Kal and Ann are awesome, great hosts, the yurts are cozy and the diving is awesome..
