viz in the San Juans

Post by Jeff Pack »

I'm tired of this sux ass toilet bowl water around here.

Is the viz better up in the San Juans?

- I got a good squirt in my mouth
- I would imagine that there would be a large amount of involuntary gagging
- I don't know about you but I'm not into swallowing it

not usually unless you're on haro strait. try neah, seiku, salt creek or lake crescent

We did Salt Creek last Saturday and i would say we had 20'-25' visibility at 35'. The Krill were thick around 10'-15' then they cleared. Nice dive, long drive!

hmm, 2.5 hours from my house, 3 or 4 dives in good viz...

Might be worth it.

Good Luck with 3 or 4 dives. Salt Creek is surge sensitive. Often the afternoon on shore breeze makes the site almost (I won't say undiveable because someone will be foolish enough to prove me wrong) undiveable. You can get in one or two dives under the right conditions then head over to Lake Cresent (almost always diveable). It is also a good way to rinse the gear. I am not a scooter diver but I am not sure how Salt Creek would be as a scooter dive?

based on a brief anchor check dive at Clark Island this weekend (near Pt Lawrence) viz was better than T Dock was last week but still +/- 10-15 ft. Worse than average for the area for sure.

Yea, I read about the surge, so I figure its a matter of checking the tide tables for some pointers.

More like the wind forecast. It rushes up between the basalt slabs and can easily knock your down and roll you big time. Smashing faces, masks, regs, whatever. If the wind is >10-15knots its not divable. Its a great dive however and fairly shallow <60fsw. Lots of kelp however so its its scooterability varies.
