The return of SCUBA trivia!!!

Hey everyone,

It's the return of scuba trivia! The rules are simple.

1) I will ask a trivia question
2) Each of you will attempt to answer the question
3) Once a correct answer is posted (to my satisfaction), then I will acknowledge said answer as correct
4) The author of the correct answer must then post a new question (and choose a correct answer to their question), and the cycle repeats

Feel free to search for the answer using internet resources, but I'm hoping the questions will be subtle enough to avoid outright "copy and paste" googling. I will also be keeping tabs on who gets the most correct, and the board members with the most points at random intervals will hopefully receive a prize! Simple enough?

If you have extra gear or potential prizes sitting around that you'd like to donate to make this more fun, let me know :)

FIRST question: what local legendary PNW species is thought to have the longest gestation of nearly any animal in the world?

Boyd nailed it -- Sixgills have a gestational age thought to be longer than 2 FREAKING years!!! They actually carry very large litters of over 100 pups, but these pups tend to ... ahem... eat each other, and far less survive.

As an aside, the spiny dogfish is right up there too, with a gestational age of around 2 years.

Nice job Scott :) Now you throw out a question!

Hmmmmm, Trivia? OK, here is the next dive trivia question.

Sticking with Scott's Shark Theme:

Which extremely rare species of shark won the top prize in a Puget Sound Dogfish Derby (fishing).
The shark was then served as fish and chips to contestants by a somewhat famous British Chef.
It wasn't until the next day that fisheries biologists spotted the trophy photo in a newspaper and realized that the "dogfish" was actually a very rare ___________________________ shark? OOPS!

:burntchef:

Bonus points if you know where the shark was caught.

No more guesses? How about a hint:

This particular species of shark is related to, but not the same as my answer above.

That should make it easier.

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner! Good job Curt! :joshsmith:

It was in fact a sevengill cow shark, which was caught from the beach of Walker Park in Hammersly Inlet (Shelton ~ 1973).

When the fisheries biologists contacted the derby organizers and asked them if they could study the shark, they replied, "sorry, we ate it."

Curt, you're up with the next scuba trivia question!

A while ago I noticed two ships named after celebrated Navy divers were moored at the Everett naval base. What are their names? :questionmarks:

USNS Carl Brashear and the USS Stethem?

If the Stethem ever moored in Everett, I missed it. The diver I was thinking of is even more well known than PO2 Stethem.

Brashear and Murphy (Allthough he was a SEAL)?

Yes, SEALs count as divers, but the USS Murphy is still under construction and hasn't been to Everett. I'd forgotten all of the ships named after divers. PO Stethem and LT Murphy both gave their lives and Chief Brashier lost his leg. It's a tough business. All of you military divers have my respect.

Okay, as I'm not on here much anymore, I'll make it a relatively easy one, sticking with the Shark theme:

It's a shallow water shark that has a penchant for crawling sometimes as an alternative to swimming.

Epaulette Sharks are known for crawling into and around tide pools on the Great Barrier Reef.
