hitch hiker ???

Post by Grateful Diver »

Well after being sick all week, I finally got back in the water tonight ... did a nice 68 minute tour of Cove 2 with Ron Sallee. Vis was the best I've seen in a long time ... maybe 25 feet or so, despite a lot of particulates in the water.

I'm putting the photo show here tonight, because I spent a lot of time at the end of the dive with a water jelly ... there was an interesting little hitch hiker attched to his underside.

Anybody know what it is? I don't ...

Cool pics, neat music to go with it too.

The first jelly you show, the neat longish one, is called Leuckartiara spp. Supposedly coastal, and only live a month or two.

The other jelly is an Aequorea spp, (Water Jellyfish) and it dines on other species of jellies, so I think it's eaten those other guys.

But I'm not sure which species they are!

Did some reading on reproduction of jellies and they don't appear to 'bud' in this stage - but do release gametes into the water in close proximity to other jellies.

I think this is a case of munching on other jellies. There's a pic in Lamb's book that shows a lot of food inside the Water Jelly pictured there.

VERY cool pics.
