Saw that one and called on it already. unfortunately its the 3100+10 Faber, 48lbs dry and -16 on the buoyancy. Ouch!

Started with an al80. Then the hp100. That wasn't enough. Then bought a hp130. Still not enough. Then bought a dive rite optima rebreather. Wanted better. Now I own a Megalodon rebreather.

So save yourself a lot of money. Skip all the intermediate stuff and get a Meg!

Actually, the Faber 3180+ tanks are my favorite for cold water diving. The 100 and 120 are both -7 lbs empty. Compare that to an AL80 at +4 lbs. That means you can drop 11 lbs of weights just by swapping tanks.

Really? You're encouraging a new diver to drop thousands of dollars instead of a couple hundred on a tank that he can always use or resell?

Sounds like you're asking him to pay a lot more right now.

The OP said he didn't want to be the one to call a dive on low air, even a 120 is no guarantee of achieving that goal.

Going doubles, most likely to achieve that, but at the expense of massive weight.

I have know knowledge of how many dives and OP's skill level.

In hind sight if I had to do it all over again, I wish some experienced RB diver would have taken me aside and explained the pro's and con's, long term costs, and tec options. Knowing what I know now, I would have rented as much gear as possible until I got buoyancy under control, about dive 60, and then transitioned directly to a rebreather. It would have saved me a lot of money in the long run.

However a potential RB diver needs a certain personality makeup. They need to be a hands on person, one who keeps their gear in a high level of maintenance, and not afraid of technology.

Rebreathers for me are a solution to many issues faced in underwater photography, tec, wreck, and cold water diving. It's amazing what I can hear when I'm not blowing bubbles, and marine life are not afraid of me. I've had several encounters with rock fish who just sit next to me with that look of "what is it?"

The value of a rebreather really comes into play when a diver travels down the tec road of mixed gas diving. EX, if you do a weekend of trimix dives once a month, in about three years, you will have paid for a used Meg just in OC trimix savings alone - four years if you factor in required training.

So, I'm not asking the OP to pay a lot now, but to consider his future dving plans and choose the most affordable path available, taking into account considerations / options in the present and near future.

Rebreathers might be something down the road to do, I love the idea of a bubble-less dive and I am definitely a gearhead and like to tinker with things, but I figure I need to start old school and get my experience from the bottom up. I'm even diving a wetsuit until this fall/winter just so I can say that I know what its like.

And buying tanks I may have to sell down the road? At the prices I'm seeing well cared for used tanks going for, I'm not too concerned. That's the reason for the post, looking to buy used, definitely not buying anything new.... though a set of doubled up 50s could be pretty cool and haven't seen any of those on the used market yet... Though maybe I need to find a pair of the old Scubapro slim 60s or 72s... that could be fun. Another subject for a different thread I think LoL!

Although I may eventually consider a rebreather down the road, for now I would recommend learning to be relaxed in the water and lowering your SAC/RMV. My favorite tanks for local dives are Faber FX117s. They weigh less than an HP119 or HP120. These days, I can stay down for 60 min or more, and am usually not the one to turn the dive, even when my buddy is on a rebreather. My RMV is generally between 0.6 and 0.7 cuf/min - nothing special.

There is a lot of technique that one can develop to be more relaxed and have fun under water before getting into the fancy breathing apparatus. Good horizontal trim, neutral buoyancy, anti-silting kicks, helicopter turns and back kicks all make for more fun and comfortable dives.

Found a couple HP 120s and a HP100 (thx pgtdvr), so I'm good to go.

Now need to off load my LP80s as they are not needed anymore.

2440 PSI + rated, so a total of 2640.
