DIW and Redondo - 10/25 - First Dive with a Snoot

Well Penders and I went our last night to take advantage of the nice tidal exchange. First we hit DIW and had a great dive. We saw the usual suspects. Wolfie, GPO, Grunt Sculpins, etc. After the DIW dive we decided to hit up Redondo and I really wanted to try out my snoot. It was definitely a challenge shooting with a snoot. But Redondo delivered with a lot of cool critters to practice on. Her are a few shoots with the snoot.

Cool Little Horned Shrimp

This was a tough one to get with the snoot. So little margin for error.

Stubby Squid

If you look close this is a shrimp being eaten by a stubby squid. This was a diffult shot with the snoot.

Flounder

These turned out beautifully with the snoot.

This was in the water column.

Have a great weekend everyone.

From Wikipedia
In photography, a snoot is a tube or similar object that fits over a studio light or portable flash and allows the photographer to control the direction and radius of the light beam.[1] These may be conical, cylindrical, or rectangular in shape. Snoots can isolate a subject when using a flash. They help by stopping "light spill", or when lighting falls in a larger footprint than intended.

Ahhhhhhh so that is a snoot.

I wasn't sure if a snoot was a term for a certain type of dive buddy who prefers to wear popped collars and pegged pants, ala Miami Vice Style.

Wow -- that first horned shrimp picture, and the first hooded nudi picture, are just plain awesome! I'm not generally wowed by snoot pictures, but those really use the focused light to tremendous advantage.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. I should have explained what a snoot was. I wish there was a better name for these, but we are stuck with the preppy 80s word :-)

Here is a photo of my setup.

I kept the strobe attached on the left just in case I saw something I had to get a shot of. The snoot is hit-and-miss.

Great job taking advantage of the snoot on the first nudibranch shot. It really transforms the image. Do you have a focus light on the strobe going through the snoot for aiming? I thought I might have recognized you in the parking lot but I'm so horrible with putting together names and faces.

I thought I recognized you too :) I did not have a focus light going through the snoot. I used a focus light to the side to light up the subject. It was truly hit and miss. I have a lot of all black photos :)

That first horned shrimp shot is awesome. Those guys are soooo hard to get a satisfactory shot of. They blend so well. That's a show stopper there.

My Dad used to talk about folks who had had a "snoot full". Who knew he was talking cameras?!
