TuTuTu 12/22 Report

Post by YellowEye »

Howdy
I did a dive at TTN tonight.

I was hoping to go photograph all the beautiful pink-mouth hydroids I saw on the boat last time I was there several months ago. Last time I counted over 200 PMH's in the area! When I got there today, unfortunately it was majorly stripped of them. Many of them were eaten away at the 'head', presumably by a nudibranch? I was able to find one that was in a barely photographable position.

Towards the end of my photo session with it, I noticed the PHM started (presumably) feeding. In this shot you can see some weird protrusions that come out of its mouth as it does. Somebody should get a macro video of these guys feeding, it is a very strange and cool sight to see!

Near the PMH, I found this little guy, which I thought was a tiny nudi eating hydroids. But on closer inspection, I think it might be a baby seacucumber. I'm looking for confirmation on that!

I found this pile of squid eggs with a cool TINY white shrimp on it in about 32 feet of water. I was getting a lot of surge, and poor so I couldn't stay long to get a better shot

Other sights included an octo, penpoint gunnels in the trailer for the boat, scalyhead sculpin (also on the trailer), a kelp greenling, one squid, many of the usual critters, plus at the very end in 3-4 feet of water I saw a small skate! (probably 8-10" across). Unfortunately my focus light battery died just before I found it, so no pic.

Viz was a milky 10 feet. There was a fast-retreating ebb going quite low.

Fantastic job YellowEye!
Those PMH look really nice! I can't believe how spectacularly awesome that white shrimp is. I'm so sad I missed him. How did you see that?

So cool about the Skate sighting too!
I'm never leaving my Weezle Extreme Plus home ever again.
Glad you had a great dive!

You missed a good dive.

Andy Lamb confirmed that the second-to-last pic is indeed a tiny sea cucumber. The thing was miniscule, smaller than the smallest nudibranch I have seen!

Safe dives tomorrow!
