On the way back from Port Hardy we stopped in Victoria and visited the Royal British Columbia Museum. While there we hit the BOOK STORE!

My latest acquisitions:

Sharks of the Pacific Northwest: Including Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska, by Alessandro De Maddalena, Antonella Preti and Tark Polanski.

Whales of the West Coast, by David E. Spalding.

Brittle Stars, Sea Urchins and Feather Stars of British Columbia, Southeast Alaska and Puget Sound, by Philip Lambert (his newest book!!!!)

Life in the Pacific Ocean (Off British Columbia), by Richard Canning, Sydney Canning and Marja deJongwestman. This book even includes a description of barnacle SEX!

Plus I replaced my missing copy of Sea Cucumbers of British Columbia, Southeast Alaska and Puget Sound, by Philip Lambert.

So.....Janna.....NEENER NEENER NEENER!!!!! :book:

Actually, my days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. :bootyshake:

Seriously, though...I had always just assumed that like many marine invertebrates barnacles would emit sperm and gametes into the water column for mass fertilization. How wrong I was! Apparently each barnacle is both male and female AND has what the authors describe as a penis several times the length of its body. That, apparently, is why barnacles are always found clumped together - so that they can reach each other with their penises.

How's THAT for an interesting topic of discussion at your next cocktail party?

Hee Hee....I've never been able to simply walk past a bookstore....they pull me in like a magnet! I was really stunned at the new material available this time, though, especially Lambert's new book. It has a beautiful basket star on the cover, and Valerie and I had just come from an area where they abound.....so NOT buying it was simply NOT an option!
