Viz Reports Wanted

Post by Tom Nic »

OK, perhaps I'm a glutton for punishment since I can't get in the water right now, but I've heard some off handed viz reports that had me bringing out the tissue to wipe the drool off my keyboard. I know from my short diving experience that we sometimes experience short windows of absolutely stunning viz during the height of Summer between algae blooms. I keep promising myself that when that 50' viz hits that I'll clear my schedule and try and dive every day I can.

So... what kind of viz are you finding out there? :bounce:

Why is the vis so much better this week? :smt119 ](*,)
It must be me mucking it all up, Or maybe someone is trying to discourage me from diving. :smt064
My last dive...4th of July ...Bent tank valve,Busted BC inflator :angryfire: ,Two out of three buddies had to cancle,Vis was average at best, maybe 10 feet, But we saw a cool Red Octo! It was more like everything above was bad, but below, everything was okay.{Vis could have been better}.
I sure hope this vis will hold out until Thursday! If it doesn't, Well then, I'll have to try again on the next Thursday! :supz:

That was the least of my problems that day. I if it wasn't for the awsome dive and the great dive buddy that was there,
I should have cancled too!

Cove 2 Friday afternoon/evening was ~30 once you got down past 35 fsw. Best I've ever seen, but then again I'm new to diving the sound. All the other times I've been I've been lucky to get 10 ft viz. I sure hope this holds out for a while. Doing Muk tomorrow morning and would love to have good viz.

Tom Nic,

Don't feel bad, it seems the moment has passed. Redondo turned to 5' vis on Friday evening. Saturday sucked too until you hit about 45'. Then it was only 10' maybe.

Double Aaarrgghhh! :axe: Don't feel bad?!? That was my point! I knew this was going to happen and I'd miss the window. :angryfire:

Oh well, hopefully it won't be the only one of the Summer. Thanks for the reports everyone, and feel free to keep 'em coming, good or bad.

Vis looked great out towards Port Townsend when I was out there yesterday, and it sucked at Cove 2 today, maybe 2-4 feet about 30, and 5-8 below that.

Different stuff growing now, almost like a red tide as opposed to the stringy snot we were diving in a week ago.

Hmm, makes me think... Did a dive yesterday at Rockaway Beach, Bainbridge Island. Went on high tide. Wind was kicking and water was choppy. Visibility 2 to 5 feet. Did not change AT all even at 60 feet. Now that you mention different stuff growing, makes me think. This was definitely NOT the stuff that Bob and I found at Cove 2 about 3 weeks ago. My skin is itching like crazy today. Some nice stuff to see (if you could see it) but not a very enjoyable dive.

Oh well! Just gotta keep diving and hope it gets better. Conditions were far superior at Rockaway beach two weekends ago. Go figure!

Keystone Jetty was not good this weekend. Viz was the worst I have ever seen it there. Maybe 10 feet if you want to be generous, probably less than that. Dove it 5 times this wekend and didn't matter if it was high tide, low tide, slack, or high current, it still wasn't good.

The night dive there on Saturday night made the bad viz worth it though. Well worth the $25 and the filling out of the permit to get to dive Keystone at night.

It goes in cycles throughout the summer. A week and a half ago the water was thick with algae "snot" ... and vis was terrible. Then the snot died and vis cleared up for a few days ... I went out last Wednesday at Redondo and it was spectactular. By the week-end it was returning to "normal". Now we'll get another algae bloom and go through another cycle.

When the algae starts looking like big clumps of snot in the water, clear your calendar for a few days hence so you can take advantage of the good vis ... it doesn't usually last more than three or four days at a time ...

We need some sort of diver alert system for this. Smokey the Bear tells me the fire danger level, why can't we have a mascot that gives the daily snot report? :dontknow: I'll keep a full tank of gas and my gear in the car if I can get reliable snot predictions. \:D/

Walter Mitty moment prematurely terminated. #-o

...Actually, once the baby is on a schedule that does not resemble the behavior of a nocturnal marsupial she'll be fine with me ducking out once in a while for a dive day(s) every once in a while. (Her words, although I added the nocturnal marsupial part)

True for the most part, but I still haven't found a better "finger on the pulse" of NW diving than this site.

Starting a thread like this one will often get the reports rolling in pretty regular... then it get's pushed down and folks forget, then someone asks or volunteers again and the reports start up again.

NWDC is a great resource to the general PNW dive community, IMO, the best one I've seen. Nothing else even comes close. If we "use" it and contribute, and continue to have discussion of diving stuff in a civil way that respects differing opinions and agencies it will only get better.
