Scientists say the £1.8million Venus (Virtual Exploration of Underwater Sites) project would enable the general public operate their own virtual submarines on wreck sites, even if they are damaged or destroyed in the future.
The EU-funded Venus project involves 11 different institutions across Europe and is the only one of its kind in the world. It has already begun to document sites around Italy, Portugal and France.
