Free Workshop

Once per month I try to offer a free workshop to enhance awareness and safety in our local dive community. In the past I have offered workshops on Technical Support Diving, Understanding Decompression Theories, and Dive Planning and Gas Management. I will continue to offer these as long as there is interest. Next month I decided to try a new topic -- “Organized Team Diving”.

Today organized team divers go by many names -- GUE diver, DIR diver, UTD diver, etc. Organized team diving is just what the name says “Organized Team Diving”. There may be subtle difference between teams, but anyone who truly sees the “Big Picture” can move beyond these minor variations during proper dive planning.

The goal of this workshop is to provide information to the Organize Team “Curious” Diver. The workshop is intended to provide an open discussion to explain why people engage in organized team diving to those that may be interested in this style of diving and to provide an opportunity for questions.

Is "Organized Team Diving" different from the "Naui Tec" approach? If not, why are you calling it "OTD" instead of "NTec?"

I called the workshop “Organized Team Diving” because I want to keep this completely agency independent. Organized team diving does not to have be associated with an agency. In fact this is one of the many fallacies I would like to discuss.

It is simply a “style” of diving. To some, very little variation in the system is acceptable, to others? They use might use this approach when dive with one group of teammates and use a completely different “style” when diving with a different group of buddies.

For a long time some advocates of this approach gave the impression it could not be applied to certain types of diving i.e. side mount, CCR, etc. This is actually not the case at all. Most if not all of the information I will cover can be applied to all aspects of diving.

Organized team diving can be applied to any agency including NAUI. Some agencies ONLY teach to this “style”, while others allow the instructor to design their classes to their own strengths (within standards of course). I am a NAUI tech instructor that does emphasize this approach. Other NAUI tech instructors will cover the same “core” information I do, even if they are using a different approach. The approach used does not make my classes any better or worse than other instructors; just different. Trimix 1 is a great example of this. You will get the same class from me whether NAUI or TDI is on your Trimix C card.

I imagine some people will take a great deal of useful information away from this workshop. My hope is that every participant can take something useful away from it. I believe this to be very useful information, but I will leave that up to the participants to decide for themselves. In February I will start the cycle over again.

I did not have one scheduled for March because I am doing two “Mini” Introduction to Team Diving workshops in April; One on April 1st in Everett and one on April 7th in Kirkland.

Theses are only 45 min versions as they are during the monthly meetings for some other local dive clubs. Contact me if you want more information on theses.

"Exploring Decompression" will be the next one I offer at my place
