I emailed the new dive shop in Newport Oregon.

We are really excited to have a dive shop at Newport again and we want to support our local coast dive shop. Some friends and I from Portland would be interested in diving at the Central Oregon Coast. The only place I have dove is the fingers and that was twenty five years ago. We would be interested in doing a boat dive on an offshore reef and having alternate shore dives set up if the boat is canceled. Do you have contact information for boats doing dive charters out of Newport or Depoe Bay? What is the best time of year for boat diving at the coast? Do you have a variety of shore dives scoped out?

Thank you for you for contacting South Beach Scuba.

There are many shore dives the Central Cost, but the best diving of all is definelty boat dives. Since there has not been a dive shop in the area for a number of years many of the services for divers, such as charters, are very limited.


There are a few charters that will take divers out, but primarily these boats are fish charters are are not necessarily equipped to function as a dive boat, but the boat captains and the divers make it work. Since we have opened the shop, there has been a lot of interest from people about boat dive, because of this, we are workng with a boat captain (who is also good frined) to provide dive trips in connection with our shop. All the details are still being worked out, but we hope to have something finalized by late Spring.

As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of shore dives within just a few minutes of Newport, including both the North and South sides of Waldport, all four jetty fingers, the LNG tower and Wacoma Dock. There is also really good diving in Netarts and Garabaldi.

Any one want to start planning a trip from the Portland area?

Sounds interesting. I, like you dove the fingers years ago, and recently dove three graces at garibaldi. Those were good, the boat diving is really interesting, so whatever, I'm interested.

Cool maybe we can start getting a group togather to fill a boat.

I was thinking in spring or early summer when the visibility gets bad in the sound. I have heard that offshore may not have the same algae bloom problems. At least waiting until the shop has the dive charter thing worked out.

That doesn’t mean we can’t just hop over the coast range to Garibaldi area to do a couple of dives and some crabbing before then. I’ll bet that with this board we could get a couple of locals to meet us at the coast.

Personally after this weekend my Saturdays are booked with my other passion Archaeology through March 14th.

i've never been diving the coast or crabbing, but i definitely want to give both a shot. how's feb 15th work for a day trip?

Blackwater and I are talking about diving the sound on Feb 16th but I don’t see why a day trip to the coast on the 15th wouldn’t work also.

i don't know diddly about the tides and sites out there. are you familiar with them?

I know a coastie at Garibaldi who dives there all the time. I have yet to dive with him but if he is not on duty I am sure he will dive with us or at the very least we should be able to get a detailed dive briefing from him. I also know someone who dives Netarts crabbing frequently.

cool. i'll see if i can find anything out, too. i'll start a separate thread later for planning and to see if there are other folks interested in coming along.

Was going to go diving/crabbing Netarts this weekend but have to finish installing my new motor on the boat, I will post up when I get it done and broke in. Will be looking for others to go with. Prob will go out in the ocean also when conditions are right.

wheres the new shop?? the marina store?? on the south side??

South Beach Scuba is 4909 S. Coast Highway, suite 305, South Beach, OR 97366, 541-867-4944. The shop's a little hard to find because it's off the highway in a storage/business park behind the South Beach post office.

The Marina Store at South Beach Marina also has a compressor and can do fills to about 3000 lbs, but that's about it.

I would also be down for some charter runs out of Newport.
Anything that brings decent diving closer to Portland is always a plus.

Some sort of organized boat or shore dives with people who know where to go would always be a plus.
Diving on the Oregon coast sure seems like the wild west with very little "developed and documented" diving areas.
