Diamond Knot and Dungeness Crane Charter

Post by boydski »

Jeff Carr and I have chartered the Mark V to dive the Diamond Knot and the Dungeness Spit Crane on July 17 - 19. If there is enough interest, we can also have the boat there for additional dives on July 15 & 16th. This is a great chance to dive the two most impressive wrecks in the State of Washington (recreational depths). Neither site is suitable for novice divers due to extreme currents and difficult surface conditions.

More information on this Wreck Diving Expedition can be found at Northwestwreckdives.com . We should get some awesome dives in if the weather cooperates! I hope we see you there.

What would you consider a suitable level of experience?

That's a good question! I updated the web pageso its a little more clear. If you want to sign up, send me an email. Sending in your deposit and contact information for the days you wish to dive will hold your spot.

I like to see at least 100 dives with experience in high current. If we dive two days/four dives at the Knot, I can guarantee that we'll get blown off the wreck at least once. You need to able to make that "go, no go" decision based on current and to be able to make a controlled free ascent from 100' in green water with high current. Only you can decide if you'd be comfortable in those conditions.

Well Ryan maybe you will have to make one of your trips out here around that time. And when it's time to dive Florida, I'll be hopping on a plane...

It has been pointed out by several people much smarter than I am that the currents for Friday May 15th are not as good for diving the Diamond Knot as those on Monday the 18th. I'm thinking of switching to a Monday dive for the Knot and leaving the weekend dives open for the Crane, and whater other sites the group would like.

Those of you that have signed up, please let me know if Monday works for you instead of a Friday. On Monday it looks like we'd have two short slack periods a little over two hours apart, which is just about right for two dives.

There are still four spots available.

Edit: Udated Itenerary

Saturday May 16th - Dungeness Spit Crane
Sunday May 17th - Group Choice of Dungeness Crane, Diamond Knot or War Hawk.
Monday May 18th - Diamond Knot

Departing from Port Angeles early morning on 5/16-18.

There are still four spots available.
I would vote for the Diamond Knot on Sunday ... I can't take a weekday off, and one of the reasons I signed up for the trip is because the previous three times I've attempted to do the "Knot" the trip always got cancelled.

Ouch! Three Cancellations is tough! I suspect we'll wind up doing the Knot on Sunday unless the weather is just too nasty.

Yeah, I've had similar luck with Duncan Rock ... been out to the rock three times, have yet to dive it.

Bright side (I suppose) is it always leaves something to look forward to ...

You'll just have to come out to Duncan with us this summer some time. Last summer, we did a nice dive on Duncan that was so calm, you could have stood on the rock. Of course, a week later, we had 14' swells and were diving in VERY sheltered waters..... :smt032

After reading the discript of this majestic boat and wicked currents I would say this is an advanced dive. I myself have over 300 dives since 2000 and I would not want to do a free ascent + a safety / drift stop in the ripping current. I look foward and eager for the dive report and pictures my diving friends. : ) May the current Gods be good to you on this journey !!!
