Try soaking it in some warm water for a few minutes and then wrangling with it. Worked like a charm on mine.

Thank you! I got it now...I had to take off the plastic attachment ring too and use a flat head screw driver. Thanks

for the future if you don't care about the old housing, just carefully cut it out with a utility knife. I did it, took like 2 minutes and went smooooooth.

Hot water, dish soap, and/or a sharp knife.

Thanks for all the help with getting my compass out of the stock boot. I have another question. Does anyone know where I can get 5/32 bungee, I know I should have ordered it with the boots but I wasn't thinking. I checked Lowes but nope, any ideas?

Just to add something to this thread: Be extremely careful with anything you use to pry the compass out of the original housing. Any scratch on the plastic will eventually result in a crack, and you will lose the compass. Says Lynne, who has thrown out two ruined ones.

I had 5/32 bungee and it was too stiff. I switched to 1/8 inch and it's better. The change was also recommended by both Rjack and Pez who said that using 5/32 would eventually tear the holes out of the mount.

<Ben> I need some 1/8" bungee.
<REI Guy> We don't have that.
<Ben> Do you have 1/8" shock chord?
<REI Guy> Sure. How much do you need?

This wasn't in Redmond was it? I had the EXACT same conversation. Just replace 1/8th with 1/4.

No it was in Kennewick.

I've had many similar conversations over the years. I went into a auto-parts store once and asked for a 17mm hex key. "They don't make them that big." was the reply. So I asked for a VW transmission drain plug wrench and the guy handed me a 17mm hex key.
