Lumpies, Pipefish, Worms, oh my

Post by coachrenz »

Did a couple of night dives at Redondo on Monday night. Saw some cool critters and everyone came back safe, it was a good dive.

Saw Grateful Diver as he was finishing his 3 lumpie dive, he gave us an idea where he saw his. We had already planned on doing a lumpie search so, off we were.

We saw this cute little guy at about 94 feet in the bottle field just as our NDL time was getting to our turn point.

On the second dive we saw this little Bay Pipefish in about 20 fsw or so on the slope out from Salty's.

Then this worm riding shotgun on the back of an star. Quite the nice ride.

And finally, at the safety stop, saw this Pipefish which had to have been the largest one I have ever seen.

Another Monday Night Delight at Redondo.

You got some great shots there coach! Love the second lumpy and both of the pipe fish. Leslie should love that scaleworm. Plenty of detail for her to get a good ID :thumb3d: :thumb3d:

It was a little deeper 94 fsw, but that could have been because of the tidal change. It was in the vicinity of the bowling ball. I sure couldn't find anymore close by. Thanks for the tip.

Nice pics Tim!

Redondo sure has been Lumpy central of late.

Makes me wonder why... and where else they are.... hmmmm???

Perhaps time of year in that the landscape is pretty "naked" and no place to hide? Or...??

Last spring I started noticing a lot of them down there ... but at the time they were really small ones. I would hazard a guess that some passing lumpy laid a mess of eggs down there, and started a colony. They don't seem to move around a whole lot, so hopefully it'll remain Lumpy Central for years to come.

Good question. Certain un-named people have accused me of turning into a warm water wussy. So I'm not sure I'm allowed into the water back home...my cold-water diving permit may have been revoked.

I'm hoping to convince said un-named person that since I'm diving a WETSUIT while he dives a DRYSUIT that I'm not really a WWW. It's all about location. I just happen to live near warm water. Not my fault!

Right on Lowell! I am certain that the diving in a wetsuit trumps the drysuit that a certain un named person will be diving! After all, you have a lifetime Puget Sound dive license..I'm pretty sure those never expire And you are just temporarily located in...shall we say...a more temperate environment?

Hi Tim -- Lovely shot of the worm. Just from the fact it's on a seastar (Pisaster?) I'd say it was probably Arctonoe fragilis. I can't be certain. Your local fauna has a lot in common with ours down here in sunny California but you have many northern species we don't get. Most of my WA-BC collecting was done on dock fouling & soft bottoms so I never got to play with many live commensals.
