Cavern Class Recommendation?

Post by Stu »

Not really sure if this belongs in the technical diving section or not but here it goes. I'm planning to go to Mexico within the next year or so and I would like to take a cavern class. I was hoping that someone could recommend a good instructor/shop, as I know there are a good many cavers here. I'm open to location at this point, but it needs to be relatively close to a beach (for the fiancé).

Mel at silent scuba is a cave instructor from up here in Seattle. she is in Florida this week then back for a week then back to Florida for cave classes. She also goes down to Mexico quite a bit.

Drop her a email. She does both OC and CCR Cave.

Dennis Weeks of Diablo Divers in Puerto Aventuras. His shop is called Aquanauts. He's a Canadian ex-pat.

Steve Bogaerts of Aztec Diving also in Puerto Aventuras (PA).

I think you'll find either one challenging and worth traveling to learn from. Its good to have local friends and knowledge in MX, things change so much day to day down there. PA is pretty centrally located with many caverns around, about 1.5 hours south of Cancun.

Another vote for Richard's instructors. Dennis is an extremely nice guy and runs a good shop. My husband has done guided dives with him, and found him careful and safety-minded. Friends of mine have done training with Steve Bogaerts, and I have had dinner with him, and I may someday take his sidemount class myself. Either man would give you good and thorough training, and would also be pleasant to spend time with.

I'll warn you, though -- set aside two more days. Cavern will NOT be enough.
