What do you do out of the water to pay for diving!
I think it would be interesting and useful to allow active members an opportunity to provide information on their expertise outside of diving to provide a resource for members to network. I understand this might be pushing the limits of TOS and advertising restrictions, but I think our close community of divers are a good resource for personal interest and advice. If I want a good auto mechanic I would like to know if a member can help. If I need a new truck I would like to offer the opportunity to have a club member assist or benefit. Is there a way we can support this without upsetting the advertising restrictions set in the TOS?
Life can be short and dives even shorter. Time off work will put it all in perspective.

I like this thread! I'm always curious how folks pay for their diving up here
Myself- I work for a large Japanese corporation that has many products but is best known for their excellent flat screen T.V.'s. The group I work in is the only North American research and development site for that company and the folks here are mostly Phd's and are pretty advanced in their fields of study. We used to research mostly LCD and IC technology but, lately, we've branched out into other areas like MEMS and sensor technologies. It's pretty exiting work and we sometimes get to see the latest greatest things before they come out to the public. I'm an equipment engineer for these guys and keep the semiconductor-type tools running as well installing new ones, ripping out old ones, modifying tools to do what they are not supposed to, and generally helping out the staff so they can find new technologies to offer. My job is similar to what folks do at Intel or AMD fabs.
I get to work with all kinds of dangerous gases and chemicals-high power RF and DC-high vacuum tools. It's a hoot.
If you ever want a flat panel T.V. you can PM me and I can see if there are any employee pricing sales on.

Unfortunately, I can't hook anyone up with discounts... I'm a Program Manager on a software development project at a local health care cooperative. They do pay me well enough to support my diving habit, though, so I'm grateful!

I suppose that offer of discounts needs some qualifications. Sometimes, you can get a better deal than the discounts I get at Costco. But occasionally, they are pretty good.

It is not always trying to get the best price for something, but trusting in some good advice. Do I buy a 52 inch LCD or Plasma. What brand do I stay away from. What success have other members had. If your neighbor needs a roof replaced and you know someone on the board is a good quality roofing contractor... then there you go. It is all about who you know or what you know and all that works well if the guy looking for your type of help knows you can help or direct them to someone who can.
There is a service out there for customer ratings called Angie's List. This is a good service, but it will not tell you if someone is a member of Northwest Dive Club! Sometimes mixing pleasure and business is not the right way to go. I would not want to be pis*# off at someone I dive with for giving me a bum deal or bad advice. But in most cases you can research the advice and make a personal decision based on all the information provided. I just like to know who I can turn to or refer for advice or trusted service. I need a garage door. I need a transmit ion specialist who won't try and sell me a $2000 replacement when it is a $50 part needed to fix the problem. I need advice on selling a home or refinancing. I'm in the market for a boat that is clean, comfortable, and has the bells and whistles my wife would enjoy camping on. Who knows, maybe cardiver has the answer to my request. Perhaps someone else knows a friend selling that 29 foot Regal for half the market value.

Re: What do you do out of the water to pay for diving!
This thread doesn't violate the TOS, as long as nobody starts flogging their own business too hard. It's absolutely fine to come on here and ask if anyone can recommend a roofer, for example. And if one of our members happens to be a roofing contractor, it would also be fine for them to respond to that thread.
What we don't want to see is Bubba's Kick-Ass Roofing Services, LLC, spamming the site.
I'm a superviser/ lead carpenter for a high-end residential building contractor, btw. Anybody need a remodel?

About that.....that last one I bought from you bit my wife on the leg and ran off, after leaving a terrible stain on the carpet. And we can't seem to get that weird smell out of the house. I want my $%*@ing money back!Pez7378 wrote:I sell hope.

Sorry Josh, It turns out he wasn't quite habilitated. We have the most luck with the ones that are RE-habilitated, but then some of those don't work out either.Joshua Smith wrote:About that.....that last one I bought from you bit my wife on the leg and ran off, after leaving a terrible stain on the carpet. J.S.
Good to know. I think I even checked out your company web site once. Can we post a business web site or blogspot for part of the introduction and information networking? I like to know where I can get resources or information. I have a blogspot for my company in the waterproof decks and railing business. We might be able to help each other on some construction projects. I placed my blogspot in my personal profile area but that would be a hit or miss for someone searching for help with decks and railing.
Perhaps we can start posting for advice on things outside the dive industry.
Anyone know how to fix my microwave?

I coreograph moves for synchronized swimming done on dry land.
Of course that is between creating baskets out of used shoelaces and dog hair...and solo, full contact tackle football.

Feel free to put whatever you want to in your signature line, but posting links to your company's site is probably crossing the line a little bit. I did it a while back, mostly because I was amazed that my boss had built a web site. I probably shouldn't have posted it, though.
We definitely want to keep the site focused on diving, helping people connect with new dive buddies, and especially on helping new divers. Of course, we have the "everything else" section, for non-diving related meanderings, but I think it would be for the best if we kept away from promoting businesses.

Norris,
Do you play offence or defence solo football. Does that mean you snap the ball and go deep for a Hell Mary. I find myself intercepting my own pass when I get confused.
