New Camera Arrived Yesterday!

Post by cardiver »

My new, Sony WX1 arrived yesterday and after a couple of minutes of going through it's features, I think that I'm going to enjoy this camera! From it's 24 mm wide angle and super close macro, to it's hd video and this neat feature that I just tried out.
It's call, "sweep panorama" and it will shoot a series of pics at more than 200 degrees and stitch them together into one photo.

Camera looks good! I thought you had settled on the S90? Assuming that you already have the housing, let's dive that new setup on Monday! :supz:
Life is good, let's dive!!

That's pretty darned cool! Now you need to find a wall covered with invertebrates and take about 4 - 5 shots from left to right and "stitch" them together!

As soon as I saw what the pic of my house looked like, I thought the same thing! Sunrise on a sunny day would look amazing!
It's a pretty slick program. You set the camera to the "sweep panorama" mode and focus slightly behind and to the left. You hold the shutter down and sweep the camera around o the right and slightly behind you. The pic comes together in about 2 seconds.

Have you ever seen the photo mural of "Bloody Bay Wall" off Little Cayman? If not, do a Google search for it.

With your camera's capability maybe you could do a mini-version of that. How many pics will it allow you to blend together?

It's basically a short movie that it stiched together as one pic. When you hold down the shutter and sweep you don't see any frames. It's just one, smooth motion.

That's impressive. I would have expected a stitched panorama like that to require a tripod. Or a tripod with the lens centered over the pivot even. That it can stitch a freehand sweep is pretty cool!

cardiver,

Let me know what you think of the camera, ultimately. I had one too - last week. I took it with me on a trip to Chicago and it excelled in some areas and I was disappointed in others. Panoramic mode was awesome, but I was annoyed with the lack of manual controls/settings and the shadow cast by the lens when using the flash @ 24mm. I also found that it made a lot of dim areas in photos red for some reason. It did take really great photos in twilight mode. Eventually, I sent it back and got the Casio H10, which I just returned today (too big, cheap-plasticky) and now I'm moving on to the Canon SD940 for a pocketable point&shoot. I really think that the S90 looks great, but being slightly bigger than the H10, probably too big for my purposes.

Ron:

Thanks for posting you experience with the WX1. I just finished my first dive with it today and I am amazed with the low light performance only using the built in flash. Photo link:
