Thursday @ Redondo

Post by cardiver »

Gracefulc and I had an amazing late afternoon dive at Redondo yesterday. Viz was easily 40 fsw and we saw quite a few critters. This was my first dive with the new camera and I was very imressed! The fastest focus lock on that I've ever seen in a p&s camera. I didn't even have to depress the shutter half way to achieve focus. The camera locks in right away and it seemed pretty accurate. There were no problems with a shadow from the lens port even at full wide angle and 1-2 inches from my subject.
This was the first time that Chris and I had dove together as buddies and it was a real pleasure. We had a couple of problems with hand signals about 30 minutes into the dive, but other than that it was avery enjoyable and relaxing dive.
Thanks, Chris!

I forgot to mention that I spotted one of these guys!

Thanks, April! Chris thinks that it looks like Roger on, "American Dad". I would have to agree!

Where'd you find the lumpie?

I was there Tuesday evening, and someone told me they had spotted one down by the two tethered boats (basically in front of Salty's) ...

Ron - how do the shots compare quality wise to your previous cameras? Any thoughts there?

I know it can be hard to tell initially, and particularly hard to tell just looking at the small screen. I know I've had shots that I thought looked amazing on the screen of the camera that weren't all that great when I had them on a monitor.

AT first glance I would say that I like this camera better than the other 4-5 that I've had. The 2.4 lens is really bright and the wide angle lens in combination with the port on the Sea & Sea housing is amazing!
You'll have to try it out next week, Tom. The focusing ability of this camera in incredible.

Sure. Can we meet at 1100? I'm going to have to stop in UWS at 1000 and get my tanks filled.

"Sunds" like a plan? Someone has Hood Canal on their mind!

great pictures Ron, what housing and strobe did you use with it?

I arrived early evening at Redondo yesterday and saw the same great vis and 4 free swimming small octos and a skate. Attached is a picture of the pristine water off of the pier.

You were probably just getting out as we were getting ready to leave. I'm using the new Sont WX1 in the Sea & Sea (Sony) housing. No strobe yet, but I have my eye on a YS110a.

I must correct Ron - Viz was easily 50!!!! fsw. :80sdance: I rolled over at 50ft and could see the surface like I was in the tropics. SOOOOO amazing!!! Really nice to get a view of the topography at Redondo - I'm so used to seeing everything in 10-20ft sections, you really dont' get the perspective of it all! And the octo was ADORABLE, but definitely looks like Roger in American Dad. :)

And oh yes, hand signals... lets just say Ron THOUGHT I was at 60' with 400psi and couldn't believe I was so calm... Needless to say, I was NOT down to 400psi and I have got to create a signal for "my computer says I have this many minutes of no deco left" hehe, oops. #-o

Ron: What type of lighting did you use, the built in flash or only ambient lighting? How deep were the pictures? I still can't get over the high quality without a strobe in Puget Sound waters.

Most of those pics were at 80-90 fsw with no external strobe.
