Re: South Hood Canal O2 levels tanking
I interviewed UW Oceanographer (and Hood Canal O2 expert) Jan Newton about the phenonemon - she said the O2 situation has improved today with northerly winds bringing more O2-rich water lower in the water column. More breathing room, as it were! But she said if the winds shift, the situation could r...

Re: A Fresh Look at Langley
I had one of those great photo moments where you only saw one thing in the frame when you took the picture... then load it onto your computer and discover what you missed. Not just one gunnel, but a stack of 'em! No wonder you were so adamant that I take a pic of yet another Langley gunnel, Kriss......

Re: Alki: 57 degrees with wolf eels galore
Hey, I'm a reporter! An old-fashioned "fact-checking" reporter. Or at least I attribute so the public knows who to blame... ;) This isn't nearly as bad as the NY Times story I read in the '90s wherein the reporter described Bill Gates' new Medina home as "a 12-minute kayak trip across...

Alki: 57 degrees with wolf eels galore
I'm heading to Alki immediately to enjoy 57-degree water and see all of those wolf eels I've been missing on my weekly dives.

Mukilteo currents?
We're thinking of diving the T-Dock for crab tomorrow midday. My book points me to the Admiralty Inlet table, and the current looks serious tomorrow. But I also read that the T-Dock currents are usually mellow.
Any advice?

Mystery anemone
Anyone know what kind of anemone this is?
It was at Alki Pipeline a couple weeks ago. It's about 4" in diameter.

Re: SI Tech vs Viking ring systems?
I ended up with the SI Tech rings and the Atlas 660 gloves with wool liners (just some thin gloves I've had for ages). Several dives later, I'm quite happy with my decision.
Thanks, all, for the recommendations!

Do I have these crabs ID'd right?
Top one is from Cove 2, bottom three are from Pipeline, all in the past few weeks.
Thanks!

Re: SI Tech vs Viking ring systems?
Thanks, y'all!
Also - for dexterity, can you recommend a particular glove? I need to be able to fiddle with camera controls, but don't want something that'll tear if I look at it wrong.

SI Tech vs Viking ring systems?
I'm choosing between SI Tech and Viking for my first dry glove ring systems (now that my Northern Diver wet gloves have been compressed down to 1 mm and are shredded enough to resemble something a Dickensian street urchin might wear). Any votes on which are easiest to don and most reliable? Thanks! ...

Re: Egg yolks--where are they?
I saw four egg yolks at Cove 2 on Monday. Two high in the water column as we descended (my buddy noticed a little cod scooting through the tentacles), two side-by-side at the I-beams. At the same time of day two weeks ago all I saw there were zillions of water jellies, which are still everywhere.

What's up with this hermit crab?
At Cove 2 yesterday I was amused to first take a pic of a little hermit crab, then a nearby striped nudi, and then watch the crab jump on the nudi's back and pose. Upon further inspection of the photos, the crab is... holding? Attached to? A shiny red ball. What is it? Here are a couple close-ups......

I think the eggs were about 3/4" to an inch long, if memory (and the refractive index) serves.

Re: One year later.
If these were boring dives, Kriss, please invite me back on a low exchange day! Cockerell's dorid (Laila cockerelli) 2.jpg I'd make the trek just to see a Cockerell's dorid. (The low-current sites we have in Seattle don't offer too many of those.) Plus I discovered baby sculpins (Red Irish lord? The...
