Mola Mola - Point Hudson
I read the post by Ron and James about all the critters and good vis off Hudson (Very nice pic's by the way! ) so I finished my Friday chores early and decided to hit the afternoon slack. Man was I glad I did. Not only was the vis great but the critters were out. However, I spent most of my time with this Mola Mola. I apologize in advance for the blurry video, as I had the video setting on macro, and didn't realize it until I was watching it on the beach. The Black's and Yellowtail's were very interested in him for some reason.
The only other Mola Mola I have seen in the wild was on the surface while Albacore fishing off La Push.
I didn't realize it at the time but the other diver (seen very briefly) in the video was Dusty. I think he got a nice still image of it.
Enjoy!

Re: Mola Mola - Point Hudson
Just WOW!!!!
Had Valerie and Dan not seen one a few years ago at Redondo, I never woulda believed it!
Even on macro setting the video turned out really well! And yeah, those Rockfish sure do seem pretty curious about it.
So, first a Yelloweye Rockfish (adult) and now a Mola Mola. What will you do for an encore???

Re: Mola Mola - Point Hudson
Unfortunatly by the time Mark pried my attention away from the two GPO's out in the open that I was shooting I was way low on air and didn't have allot of time so I only got one shot but I made it count! Too bad it didn't happen on thursday when the whole crowd was here. Today was calm and everything was out for photo op's. Including these guys

Yes you did. Way To Go!Dusty2 wrote:...I only got one shot but I made it count!
By the way, the timestamp on my video says 2009. I noticed the typo too late in the process.
I am thinking a Puget Sound Hawksbill Turtle would do the trick.nwscubamom wrote: What will you do for an encore??? - Janna

I'd never heard of a Mola Mola, so I just wikipedia'd it. Pretty interesting beastie. The one in the video would you guess it was about three to four feet long? The swimming motions were a lot more --- predetermined--- than I had expected from the writeup.
Way cool!

I would like to tell you that it was THIS BIG (stretching arms as far apart as I can), but it was just a little guy. If I had to guess, I would say somewhere in the 1.5 to 2ft range.Blaiz wrote:....The one in the video would you guess it was about three to four feet long?

Maybe his GPS is broken??H20doctor wrote:why is this fish in our waters ....?
From what I understand they are wanderer. Pretty much go where the currents and winds carry them. They are seen off the pacific coast often and there have been sightings at neah bay so it's no big leap for them to drift thru the straits and Hudson is only a couple of miles south from the straits. I mean we do get Grey whales and even an occasional white shark so why not these guys.

Mark--I don't dive with you enough . . . well technically, I guess we've never actually had the chance to dive together since you've been the captain, so dammit, we need to dive together and you need to show me some of this cool stuff you've been seeing!!

Pure dumb luck Kelly and a simple case of "right-place-right-time". That said, by all means, let's go dive! No promises on out of the ordinary critters though.ktb wrote:....we need to dive together and you need to show me some of this cool stuff you've been seeing!!
