Permanent marker removal

Post by Gdog »

Any great ideas on the best way to remove black marker from a galvanized steel scuba tank? Bought one second hand, and need to remove the initials off of it.

Goof off and a scotch brite pad worked OK. I wasn't able to get it all off, but 95% was good enough.

Put ZRC cold galvanizing over it. If the marker is only on the neck that 'paint' will last a long time before wearing through.

Goof off might work but if the marker is at all old there will probably be a residual "halo" until it wears off with the outer layer of zinc in the next 25yrs.

I've had reasonably good success removing it with nail polish remover.

+1 Nail Polish Remover. Lay down a swipe, let it sit for a couple of seconds, and then lay down a fresh swipe, and scrub. Wash, rinse, repeat. I've never had to use anything else. Galvanized or painted.

BTW - depending on the marker, isopropyl alcohol will also often do the trick, and I usually have the prep pads lying around from a first aid kit.
